Presto il giudizio contro Kevin Crilly per omicidio Nairac

Il giudizio contro Kevin Crilly sta per essere emesso in relazione all’assassinio del soldato sotto copertura Robert Nairac, avvenuto 33 anni fa

Kevin Crilly, 60 anni abitante a Jonesborough, nega l’omicidio del capitano Nairac avvenuto tra il 13 e 16 maggio 1977 e respinge le “accuse correlate” che comprendono il rapimento e la detenzione del soldato.

Il capitano Nairac venne rapito in un bar in South Armagh nel 1977 e portato attraverso il confine nella contea di Louth, quindi fu ucciso.

Il giudice Richard McLaughlin emetterà il suo verdetto entro un mese, dopo il processo senza giuria. Farà sapere la sua decisione alla Belfast Crown Court.

Dopo l’uccisione di Nairac, Crilly presumibilmente fuggì negli Stati Uniti per 27 anni utilizzando il suo nome di nascita, Declan Power.

L’accusa ha sostenuto che dopo il rapimento del capitano Nairac dal Three Steps Inn, Crilly, 26 anni all’epoca, andò a prendere il killer Liam Townson, in seguito condannato dalla Corte Penale Speciale di Dublino.

Crilly avrebbe portato il soldato fino al ponte a Ravensdale Forest, Co Louth, nella Repubblica d’Irlanda, dove, secondo Townson, Nairac è stato giustiziato.

Tre uomini sono già stati condannati in relazione alla morte di Nairac, uno per omicidio colposo e due con accuse minori.

Nairac fu poi insignito della George Cross.

La sentenza sarà resa alla Belfast Crown Court.

Judgement due in Nairac murder case

Judgement is due in the trial of a County Armagh man for the murder of undercover soldier Captain Robert Nairac 33 years ago.

60-year-old Kevin Crilly from Lowerfoughill Road, Jonesborough, denies the murder of Captain Nairac between 13 and 16 May 1977 and “associated charges” which involved the abduction and holding of the soldier.

Captain Nairac was abducted from a bar in south Armagh in 1977 and taken across the border to County Louth and killed.

Mr Justice Richard McLaughlin has been considering his verdict for a month following the no-jury trial. He will give his decision at Belfast Crown Court later.

Following the murder Crilly allegedly went on the run in the US for 27 years using his birth name Declan Power.

The prosecution claimed that following the kidnapping of Captain Nairac from the Three Steps Inn, Crilly, then aged 26, picked up the gunman Liam Townson, who was later convicted by the Special Criminal Court in Dublin.

He allegedly drove the soldier to the bridge in Ravensdale Forest, Co Louth, in the Irish Republic, where according to Townson he was shot.

A total of three men have already been convicted of the killing, one manslaughter and two on lesser charges.
Nairac was later awarded the George Cross.

The judgement will be made at Belfast Crown Court.
