Matt Baggott sta per prendere possesso del suo nuovo ruolo di comandante della Police Service of Northern ireland
Baggott, sposato e padre di tre figli, giunge alla PSNI dopo aver guidato per sette anni la Leicestershire Constabulary.
Uno dei suoi primi impegni sarà un incontro con il presidente del Policing Board, Barry Gilligan.
Baggott incontrerà anche gli ufficiali di alto rango della polizia, che conta 7.321 agenti.
Dovrà guidare la PSNI dopo una riduzione del budget e in seguito alla crescita dell’attività repubblicana.
Questo mese è stata scoperta una bomba di quasi 300 kg in una zona di confine e la scorsa settimana ci sono stati tre giorni di disordini a Lurgan.
La sua squadra di comando era preoccupata per l’eventualità di un attacco repubblicano che avrebbe messo in ombra il suo arrivo, quindi hanno lanciato un’operazione di polizia per bloccare questo pericolo.
Chiamata Operation Dissent, ha causato un innalzamento nel numero di posti di blocco e trasferito sulle strade molte più pattuglie di agenti.
La minaccia proveniente dai repubblicani, anche se non uguale a quella messa in essere dall’IRA, resta comunque letale.
Due soldati ed un poliziotto sono stati uccisi dai repubblicani nel 2009.
Le morti furono condannate da tutte le forze politiche, con la dirigenza dello Sinn Fein che chiamò i repubblicani “traditori”.

Baggott’s first day as PSNI chief
Matt Baggott is to take over as the head of the Police Service of Northern Ireland on Tuesday.
The married father-of-three comes to the PSNI after seven years as chief constable of the Leicestershire Constabulary.
One of his first engagements will be a meeting with the Policing Board Chairman Barry Gilligan.
Mr Baggott will also be meeting senior commanders of the force, which has 7,321 regular officers.
He takes over at a time of shrinking police budgets and a surge in dissident republican activity.
Within the last month there has been the discovery of a 600lb bomb in a border area and civil disturbances in Lurgan.
His command team was so concerned at the prospect of a dissident attack to overshadow his arrival they launched an operation aimed at disrupting it.
Codenamed Operation Dissent, it saw an increase in vehicle checkpoints and high visibility patrols.
The threat from dissident republicans while not in the same league as that once posed by the IRA is deadly.
Two soldiers and a police officer have been killed by dissidents in 2009.
The murders were condemned across the political spectrum, with the leadership of mainstream republicanism branding the dissidents “traitors”.
