Steven Agnew has been elected as the leader of the Green Party in Northern Ireland.

Steven Agnew | Green PartyIt is the first time the Green Party has elected a leader in the region.

Mr Agnew was up against Down councillor Cadogan Enright in the leadership contest.

He told UTV his sights are now on the forthcoming assembly election.

“I have always believed that the Green Partie’s message is strong but perhaps where we haven’t been strong is in how we deliver, I think we have improved on that”, he said.

“Having an MLA in the assembly has helped us do it.

“We have been able to take the message to people that it is worth voting for the Green Party because we can get people elected, he added.

“I believe we will get more people elected than ever in the forthcoming elections.”

In 2007, the first Green MLA Brian Wilson was elected at Stormont representing North Down.

In 2009 Mr Agnew stood as the Green candidate in the European election, securing over 15,500 votes and trebling the Green Party vote since 2004.

Last year, he came fifth in the North Down constituency in the General Election.

Originally from Dundonald, Belfast, he studied Philosophy at Queens University.
