La proposta dello Sinn Féin di cambiare il nome ufficiale da Londonderry a Derry è stata definita “settaria” dagli unionisti
La mozione per il cambio del nome della città è stata approvata giovedì durante una riunione del Consiglio Distrettuale di Derry City e Strabane.
Il Consiglio adesso scriverà al Ministro dell’Ambiente per chiedere come procedere con il cambiamento.
Tutti i precedenti tentativi di cambiare il nome di Derry erano falliti.
Il prefisso London era stato aggiunto a Derry nel 1613, grazie ad una Royal Charter di Re Giacomo I.
Nel 1984 il nome dei Consiglio – controllato dai nazionalisti – fu modificato da Londonderry in Derry City Council, ma la città, ufficialmente, continua a chiamarsi Londonderry.
La questione fu trascinata presso l’Alta Corte, nel 2007, e il giudice stabilì che il nome della città può essere cambiato solo con una legge o con una decisione dei Reali.
Lavoro non finito
Giovedì il consigliere dello Sinn Féin Eric McGinley ha presentato la mozione in Consiglio.
“Nel precedente Consiglio di Derry City c’era una chiara politica di cambiare il nome ufficiale della città, riportandolo a Derry.
“Sfortunatamente quella proposta venne respinta da DUP e SDLP così stiamo semplicemente rivisitando la questione e adesso cerchiamo nuovamente di cambiare il nome ufficiale”.
McGinley ha aggiunto che la proposta non intendeva cancellare con la gomma la parola London dalla storia della città di Derry.
“Abbiamo una netta visione che la città necessiti di un nome chiaro, un solo nome, una singola identità per promuovere la città nel mondo”.
Il consigliere DUP David Ramsey ha detto che la mozione era un altro tentativo di alimentare le tensioni.
“Se i politici nazionalisti e repubblicani sono seri riguardo l’uguaglianza e il futuro condiviso dovremmo celebrare la nostra connessione con Londra.
“Dovremmo anche celebrare la nostra diversità, dalla cultura e dalla storia sia dell’Inghilterra che dell’Irlanda, e ciò include anche lo storico nome di Londonderry.
“Questo crea tensioni settarie e come si riflette sull’obiettivo di repubblicani e nazionalisti di raggiungere un futuro condiviso?”

Council efforts to change Londonderry name to Derry condemned
A proposal by Sinn Féin to change the official name of Londonderry to Derry has been described as “sectarian” by unionists.
A motion supporting the name change was passed at a meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council on Thursday.
Council will now write to the Environment Minister to seek clarification on how to go about the change.
All previous attempts for the name change have failed.
The London prefix was added to Derry when the city was granted a Royal Charter by King James I in 1613.
In 1984 the name of the nationalist-controlled council was changed from Londonderry to Derry City Council, but the city itself continues to be officially known as Londonderry.
The issue was addressed in the High Court in 2007 when the judge ruled that only legislation or Royal prerogative could change the city’s name.
‘Unfinished business’
On Thursday, Sinn Féin Councillor Eric McGinley brought the motion to the council.
“In the previous Derry City Council there was a clear policy to change the official name of the city back to Derry.
“Unfortunately that proposal was defeated by the DUP and SDLP so we’re simply revisiting the issue and yesterday’s decision now seeks again to change the official name.”
Mr McGinley added that the proposal was not about airbrushing London from the history of the city.
“We have a clear view that the city needs a clear brand, one single name, one single identity would help promote the city around the world.”
DUP councillor David Ramsey said the motion was simply another attempt to stir up tensions.
“If republican and nationalists politicians in the city are serious about equality and a shared future we should be celebrating our connection with London.
“We should also be celebrating our diversity of our British and Irish cultures and history which includes the historical name Londonderry after the stonemasons who built the city.
“It creates sectarian tension and how does this reflect upon the nationalist republican goal to achieve a shared future?”
