Protesta IPWA a Portlaoise

Oltre 100 repubblicani e socialisti hanno partecipato alla protesta svoltasi all’esterno della prigione di Portlaoise a supporto dei prigionieri repubblicani. Nel braccio E3 i prigionieri effettuano una No Wah/Dirty Protest per protestare contro la sospensione dei programmi di rilascio temporaneo (Temporary Release – TR) e del rilascio compassionevole (Compassionate Release).

Campanacci e fischietti sono stati utilizzati da parte della folla che otteneva continui auguri e squilli di clacson dagli automobilisti in transito, per il fastidio dei poliziotti e degli ufficiali dello Special Branch presente.

La protesta, molto partecipata, è durata due ore e c’è stata una session di ballate che hanno innalzato il morale, cui hanno partecipato molte persone cantando e ballando con entusiasmo. La protesta è terminata con un discorso di un portavoce dell’IRPWA (Irish Republican Prisiners Welfare Association) nel quale è stato spiegato lo stato attuale della protesta nella prigione, e ha ringraziato tutti i partecipanti, alcuni dei quali sono giunti da Belfast, Derry, Meath e Dublino. Gli appartenenti dell’Irish Republican Socialist Party di Dublino sono stati ringraziato per la presenza ed il continuo appoggio.

In un sinistro sviluppo seguito alla protesta, il conosciuto membro dell’IRSP di Dublino, Denis Murphy, ed il suo nipote che avevano scattato fotografie della protesta, sono stati fermati all’esterno di Portlaoise da membri dello Special Branch. Si stavano preparando a raggiungere Mayo per prendere parte alla protesta Shell to Sea prevista per la stessa sera.

Lo Special Branch ha chiesto la fotocamera e solo dopo le minacce di arresto, i due repubblicani l’hanno consegnata. Quando l’ufficiale ha riscontrato l’assenza della card di memoria, si è agitato e ha chiesto l’immediata consegna della memoria. Per tutta risposta il nipote di Murphy ha affermato che né lui né lo zio avevano con loro la memoria, che era stata chiesta da un’altra persona durante la protesta per tenerla al sicuro.

Denis ed il suo nipote sono stati fatti scendere dalla vettura, quindi sono stati perquisiti a lato di una strada trafficata. Gli automobilisti in transito hanno assistito perplessi alla scena. Quando lo Special Branch non hanno trovato nulla hanno speso i successivi venti minuti a cercare la memoria della macchina fotografica all’interno dell’auto. Sia Denis Murphy che suo nipote sono stati avvisati che potranno fare un reclamo formale sul loro fermo illegale.

IRPWA, Prison Protest Portlaoise

Over 100 Republicans / Socialists were involved in a protest outside portlaoise prison today in support of the Republican POWs who are currently involved in a dirty protest / hunger strike on E3 landing due to the suspension of the temporary release (TR) and compassionate release (CR) programmes.

Bull-horns and whistles were blown by a section of the crowd which drew a continuous honk of approval and best wishes from the continuous passing motorists to the annoyance of the large special branch and gardai presence.

The well attended protest which lasted for two hours was treated to a moral boosting ballad session, where many joined in to sing along to rousing ballads. The protest ended with an IRPWA spokesperson giving a brief outline concerning the current status of the prison protest, and thanked all those who attended especially those who traveled from Belfast, Derry, Meath and Dublin. Members of Dublin IRSP were thanked for the presence and continued support.

In a more sinister development following the protest, long-standing and well respected Dublin IRSP member Denis Murphy and his nephew who had earlier took photos of the protest were stopped just outside Portlaoise by members of the special branch as they were making there way to Mayo to take part in a Shell to Sea protest that was schedualed for this evening.

The SB demanded that the camera be handed over, and after been threatened with arrest, it was given over. When the SB man noticed that the memory chip was missing, he became very agitated and demanded that the memory chip be produced immediately. He was told that the memory chip was neither in his or his uncles possession, that a third party who was at the protest had requested it for safe keeping.

Denis and his nephew were ordered out of there vehicle, where they were searched at the side of a busy road, where startled motorists looked on in bewilderment. When the SB found nothing they then spent the next twenty minutes or so searching the vehicle for the memory chip. After finding nothing they told them to be on there way. Both Denis and his nephew have been advised to make a formal complaint about there illegal detention.
