Ben Kingsley recita il ruolo di un agente dello Special Branch e Jim Sturgess è un informatore nel film tratto dalle memorie di Martin McGartland.
Il titolo Fifty Dead Men Walking si riferisce al numero di presunte vite salvate dalle azioni di McGartland tra il 1987 ed il 1991.
In un’intervista rilasciata lo scorso anno, Rose McGowan – che interpreta il ruolo di una donna dell’IRA – ha affermato che “al 100%” si sarebbe arruolata nell’IRA se avesse vissuto a Belfast durante i Troubles.
Alcuni membri del FAIR (Families Acting for Innocent Relatives – Famiglie che agiscono per i parenti innocenti) – incluso il direttore William Frazer – mostravano cartelli all’esterno della Movie House in Dublin Road sabato sera, quando il film è stato proiettato alla conclusione del Jameson Belfast Film Festival.
Uno dei dimostranti mostrava le immagini di alcune delle 12 vittime della bomba dell’IRA al La Mon House Hotel.
Un altro mostrava gli attimi seguenti alla bomba di Enniskillen con le parole “Quale ruolo vuoi fare in questo, Rose?”
Martin Preshur, manager della Movie House, ha deto che protesta è stata “pacifica”.
“Non hanno causato alcun fastidio ai clienti che entravano”.
Preshur ha riferito che la regista Kari Skogland ha parlato durante la premiere dei suoi contatti con McGartland, aggiungendo che ha elogiato Belfasto come location per il film.
Alla proiezione del film hanno assistito alcuni membri del cast, tra cui Tom Colliins, che ha recitato il ruolo di Mikey.
Ben Kingsley, Rose McGowan e Jim Sturgess non erano presenti alla prima del film.
Kingsley ha registrato un messaggio di tre minuti per spiegare la sua assenza.
Protests held at ‘informer’ film premiere
Protests were held by a victims’ group at the premiere of a film inspired by an IRA informer.
Starring Sir Ben Kingsley and Jim Sturgess as a Special Branch handler and informer respectively, 50 Dead Men Walking is based on the memoir of the same name by Martin McGartland.
The title refers to the number of lives allegedly saved by Mr McGartland’s actions from 1987 to 1991.
In an interview last year, Rose McGowan (right), who plays an IRA woman in the film, said she would “100%” have joined the IRA had she lived in Belfast during the Troubles.
One showed pictures of some of the 12 victims of the IRA bombing of La Mon House Hotel.
Another showed the aftermath of the Enniskillen bomb with the words “what part do you want to play in this, Rose?”
Martin Preshur, a Movie House manager, said the protests had been “peaceful”.
“They didn’t cause any trouble to any customers coming in.”
Mr Preshur said the film’s director Kari Skogland spoke at the premiere about her contact with Mr McGartland, adding that she also praised Belfast as a film location.
The Belfast screening was attended by only some of the cast, including Tom Collins, who plays Mikey.
Sir Ben, Miss McGowan and Mr Sturgess did not attend.
It is believed Sir Ben had recorded a three minute message explaining his absence.
