Proteste attese a Belfast per il voto sulle bandiere alla City Hall

Dovrebbe avere luogo una protesta prima della votazione in Consiglio comunale della mozione che stabilisce il ritiro della Union Jack dai pennoni della City Hall

I consiglieri voteranno oggi per decidere se avallare la precedente decisione di un sotto comitato consiliare che ha deciso la rimozione della bandiera dell’Unione.

La Union Jack ha sventolato sui pennoni della City Hall di Belfast ogni giorno da oltre un secolo.

Se la mozione passerà anche le bandiere sulla Ulster Hall e sul complesso di Duncrue verranno ammainate.

“Noi manterremo ampie vedute ma una cosa è certa”, ha detto Jim McVeigh dello Sinn Féin.

“Le cose cambieranno nella serata di lunedi. L’attuale politica di esposizione delle bandiere in queste tre sedi dovrà finire lunedì”.

L’Alliance Party – i cui voti potrebbero far oscillare la decisione – sostengono la regolamentazione dell’esposizione delle bandiere solo in determinati giorni.

Ma i membri unionisti del Consiglio comunale hanno detto che faranno tutto quanto in loro potere per opporsi a questo compromesso.

Il consigliere DUP Brian Kingston ha detto che si aspetta una grande affluenza alla protesta che avverrà alle 18, poco prima del voto.

“Per me è chiaro, anche dai commenti che le persone mi hanno rilasciato personalmente, che questo sta per provocare un’enorme reazione. Le persone sono indignate per il tentativo di voler rimuovere la nostra bandiera, la bandiera dell’Unione, dalla nostra City Hall”, ha spiegato .

“Sembra che molte persone hanno intenzione di mostrare la propria opposizione e ci saranno proteste fuori dal municipio”.

Protest expected before Belfast flag vote

A protest is expected to take place at Belfast City Hall on Monday in opposition to a controversial vote which could see the Union flag taken down from the building.

Councillors will make their decision during a vote, prior to which nationalist members have said they back the removal of the flag.

The Union flag has flown at Belfast City Hall every day for more than a century.

If the motion is passed, flags at the Ulster Hall and the council’s Duncrue complex could also be taken down.

“We will keep an open mind in terms of some of the oppositions but one thing’s for sure,” said Sinn Féin’s Jim McVeigh.

“Things will change on Monday night. The current policy of flying the flag in those three locations will have to end on Monday.”

The Alliance Party – whose votes could swing the decision – have said they support the flying of the flag on designated days only.

But Unionist members of the council have said they will do all in their power to oppose this compromise.

DUP councillor Brian Kingston said he expects a big turnout at the protest just before the 6pm vote.

“It’s clear to me, and from comments that people have made to me personally, this is going to provoke a huge reaction and people are outraged at this attempt to remove our country’s flag, the Union flag, from our city hall,” he explained.

“It seems that many people are intending to come down to show their opposition and there will be protests outside city hall.”
