Il murales delle “donne in lotta” dipinto in Falls Road commemorava le donne dell’IRA, tra cui Mairead Farrell, assassinata dai militari della SAS a Gibilterra, e Maire Drumm, vice-presidente dello Sinn Féin uccisa dai lealisti nell’ospedale Mater di Belfast.
Ma il murale è stato recentemente rimosso dallo Sinn Féin. Adesso un murale raffigurante lo Zio Sam che dice “Proprietari, abbiamo bisogno di voi” è stato eretto da un’azienda locale al suo posto.
Pubblicizza i servizi di Northern Property, una facoltosa agenzia immobiliare di Falls Road. Stranamente, il nuovo murale è posizionato sopra ad una delle icone repubblicane quale il socialista James Connolly, il leader del 1916 noto per il suo odio per i padroni di casa.
L’ex-prigioniera IRA Nuala Perry, che conosceva sia Farrell che Drumm ha detto: “Sono inorridita dal fatto che Mairead e Maire sono state cancellate per dei proprietari di case. Questo dimostra quello che è diventata West Belfast – è tutta una questione di soldi, niente più repubblicanesimo e socialismo. L’ultima cosa di cui abbiamo bisogno è più padroni di casa”.
I residenti erano così arrabbiati che la pubblicità di Northern Property è stata colpita lo scorso fine settimana con bombe di vernice ed è poi stata rimossa. “Non mi sorprende quello che è successo. La gente era molto arrabbiata”, ha detto Perry, che ha servito cinque anni nel carcere di Armagh.
Padraic McCotter, un ex blanketman che ha scontato 15 anni a Long Kesh, si è detto stupito che il murales sulle donne repubblicane era stato messo da parte per l’annuncio dei proprietari. “Quando ne ho sentito parlare, ho pensato che fosse uno scherzo.
“L’ironia deve essere finita in chi ha messo questo annuncio, dato che è stato posto sopra un dipinto di James Connolly”. McCotter ha chiesto di rimettere il murales delle donne sul muro di Rockmount Street.
Tony Donnelly, direttore di Northern Property, ha detto che il suo ufficio è stato inondato di chiamate per la rimozione del murales. Ha ricordato che lo Sinn Fein aveva deciso di rimuoverlo ed in seguito la sua società ha eretto la sua pubblicità.
“Oggi abbiamo capito che non è stata un’idea brillante ed il murales precedente verrà ripristinato a tempo debito”, ha detto. Gli ex-prigionieri si sono lamentati per il sostegno fornito dallo Sinn Féin ad alcune agenzie immobiliari.
Donnelly ha confermato che Northern Property ha pubblicizzato i propri servizi nei notiziari locali dello Sinn Féin ed ha partecipato ad una cena di raccolta fondi promossa dallo Sinn Féin presso l’hotel Europa.

Fury after republican women martyrs dumped for landlord ad

The ‘women in struggle’ mural on the Falls Road commemorated famous IRA women including Mairead Farrell, killed by the SAS in Gibraltar and Maire Drumm, the Sinn Féin vice-president assassinated by loyalists in Belfast’s Mater hospital.
But the detachable mural was recently removed by Sinn Féin. A mural depicting Uncle Sam saying ‘Landlords We Need You’ was then erected in its place by a local business.
It advertised the services of Northern Property, a wealthy Falls Road-based estate agency. Bizarrely, the new mural sat above one of republican socialist icon James Connolly, the 1916 leader renowned for his hatred of landlords.
Ex-IRA prisoner, Nuala Perry, who knew both Farrell and Drumm said: “I’m horrified that Mairead and Maire have been discarded for landlords. This shows what West Belfast has become – it’s all about money and nothing about republicanism or socialism now. The last thing we need is more landlords.”
So enraged were locals that Northern Property’s ad was paint-bombed last weekend and has now been removed. “I’m not surprised that happened. People were very angry,” said Perry who served five years in Armagh prison.
Padraic McCotter, a former blanketman who served 15 years in Long Kesh, said he was stunned that the women’s mural had been cast aside for the landlords’ ad. “When I first heard of it, I thought it was a joke.
“The irony must be lost on (those) who put this ad up given that it’s placed above a painting of James Connolly.” McCotter called for the republican women to be put back on the Rockmount Street wall.
Tony Donnelly, director of Northern Property, said his office had been inundated with calls about the mural’s removal. He said it had been taken down by Sinn Féin and his company had then erected its ad separately.
“We now realise that wasn’t a brilliant idea and the old mural will be reinstated in due course,” he said. Ex-prisoners have complained about Sinn Féin’s support for some property firms.
Donnelly confirmed that Northern Property advertised in the local Sinn Féin news-sheet and the company had attended a Sinn Féin fund-raising dinner in the Europa hotel.
