La PSNI ha subito dure critiche per la decisione di invertire il percorso della parata di Rasharkin
La parata era stata rimandata di oltre tre ore dopo che un oggetto sospetto era stato trovato presso la Orange Hall in Main Street intorno alle 19:00 di venerdì sera.
Main Street, lungo la quale la Ballymaconnelly Sons of Conquerors Flute Band doveva marciare, è stata transennata e gli esperti artificieri dell’esercito sono giunti sulla scena mentre centinaia di sostenitori unionisti applaudivano.
L’allarme bomba è stato successivamente dichiarato un falso.
Il corteo poi ha preso il via invertendo il percorso stabilito.
John Filnay, assessore del DUP, ha detto che il falso allarme è stato un tentativo di bloccare la parata.
“Sono assolutamente da condannare chi ha lasciato questo oggetto sospetto fuori dalla Orange Hall di Rasharkin.
“Questi atti c’erano nel passato. E’ triste che una minoranza abbia cercato di inasprire le tensioni questa sera e, di fatto, bloccare la parata”, ha affermato.
Daithi McKay, parlamentare di North Antrim per lo Sinn Féin, ha detto che la decisione della PSNI di reindirizzare una parata in Rasharkin era illegale.
“Dopo il finto ordigno lasciato stanotte presso la Orange Hall, la sfilata è stata ritardata fino a ben dopo le ore 22. Non c’era alcun senso per qualsiasi sfilata di aver luogo dopo quell’ora ed è stato anche sorprendente che gli ufficiali di alto grado della PSNI abbiano dato il via libera per un percorso alternativo di questa parata senza consultarsi con la Commissione Parate. La domanda da porre è perché lo fanno e sotto la direzione di chi?
“Un numero inadeguato degli agenti di polizia erano presente per far fronte a migliaia di lealisti che erano ubriachi, hanno lanciato bottiglie e minacciato enormi disordini nella cittadina. A causa della minaccia la polizia poi ha preso la decisione di forzare la sfilata attraversato da un percorso illegale. Non avevano diritto di fare questo”.
In una dichiarazione l’Ispettore Capo della PSNI Ryan Henderson, ha dichiarato: “Un lavoro complesso era stato fatto dietro le quinte.
“Tuttavia a causa delle azioni di individui irresponsabili intenti a far crescere le tensioni e le divisioni e che hanno deliberatamente posto un oggetto sospetto nella zona ben sapendo i problemi e le difficoltà che questo avrebbe causato, la sfilata è stata rinviata per un certo periodo di tempo.
“Mentre la sicurezza di tutti nella zona è stata la nostra prima priorità, la decisione è stata presa nel migliore interesse di tutti, consentendo alla sfilata di procedere lungo il percorso in senso inverso. Questo ha dato più tempo per assicurare che il presunto ordigno sarebbe stato messo in sicurezza e ha ridotto il ritardo ancora maggiore che avremmo ottenuto se si fosse utilizzata la direzione approvata della parata. Si trattava di una soluzione pratica a un problema che non era sollevato dagli organizzatori parata o dal gruppo di residenti.
“La parata è passata quasi senza incidenti di rilievo. Un breve tentativo di fermare la parata è stato rapidamente affrontato e la marcia è passata tranquillamente. Nessun arresto è stati effettuati la sera. Un team dedicato è stato istituito per esaminare filmati raccolti dalla nostra squadra e qualsiasi disordine catturato nei filmati verrà affrontato.
“Siamo ansiosi di continuare a lavorare a stretto contatto con tutta la comunità degli Rasharkin in futuro per affrontare eventuali questioni di interesse. E’ fondamentale che le persone continuino ad impegnarsi nel dialogo e a trovare soluzioni accettabili a lungo termine ai problemi locali”.
L’anno scorso ci furono piccoli focolai di disordine, quando alcuni oggetti vennero lanciati contro gli orangisti.

PSNI criticised for handling of Rasharkin parade
The PSNI has been criticised for its handling of a loyalist band parade in Rasharkin.
The parade was delayed for over three hours after a suspicious object was found at the Orange Hall in Main Street at around 7pm on Friday night.
Main Street, along which the Ballymaconnelly Sons of Conquerors Flute Band were due to march, was cordoned off and army bomb experts moved in as hundreds of band supporters cheered.
The bomb scare was later declared a hoax.
The parade eventually got underway using an alternate route.
Local DUP councillor John Finlay said the hoax alert was an attempt to block the parade.
“I totally condemn those responsible for this suspicious object planted outside the Orange Hall in Rasharkin.
“These acts lie in the past. It is sad that a minority have sought to heighten tensions here this evening and in effect block the parade,” he said.
North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay says the PSNI’s decision to reroute a parade in Rasharkin was illegal.
“After a hoax bomb was placed at the Orange Hall tonight the parade was delayed until well after 10 o’clock. It was nonsensical for any parade to be taking place after that time and it was also astounding that senior PSNI officers gave the go ahead for an alternative route for this parade without consulting with the Parades Commission. The question which needs to be asked of them is why did they do that and under whose direction?
“An inappropriate number of police officers were in place to deal with thousands of loyalists who were intoxicated, threw bottles and threatened huge disorder in the village. Because they threatened major disorder the police then took the decision to force the parade through by an illegal route. They had no right to do this.”
In a statement PSNI Chief Inspector Ryan Henderson said:”Dedicated work had gone on behind the scenes by parade and protest organisers and community leaders in the run-up to last night’s parade to reduce the
“However due to the actions of irresponsible individuals intent on increasing tensions and division who deliberately placed a suspicious object in the area knowing full well the disruption and difficulties this would cause, the parade was postponed for a period of time.
“As the safety of everyone in the area was our first priority, the decision was taken that it was in the best interests of everyone to allow the parade to proceed along the route in reverse. This gave more time to ensure that the device would be made safe and reduced the even greater delay that would have resulted if the original direction of the parade has been used. This was a practical solution to a problem that was not of the making of the parade organisers or the residents group.
“The parade passed largely without major incident. A brief attempt to halt the parade was quickly dealt with and the parade able to pass. No arrests were made on the evening. A dedicated team has been set up to examine footage collected by our video evidence teams and any disorder captured on that footage will be dealt with.
“We look forward to continuing to work closely with the whole community of Rasharkin in the future to address any issues of concern. It is crucial that people continue to engage in dialogue and find long-term acceptable solutions to local issues.”
Last year there was minor trouble at the parade when some missiles were thrown at marchers.
