Avviata un’inchiesta sulla presunta richiesta fatta ad un diciannovenne di West Belfast dalla PSNI di entrare in un gruppo repubblicano e piazzare esplosivo contro i vicini

Il Police Ombudsman Al Hutchinson ha confermato che il suo Ufficio indagherà sulle voci riportate martedì su un quotidiano, secondo cui i poliziotti avrebbero chiesto ad un diciannovenne di commettere crimini per far cadere le accuse di taccheggio nei negozi.

Il giornale ha scritto che al giovane, mentre era stato fermato per taccheggio, la polizia aveva chiesto di osservare alcune persone, entrare in un gruppo repubblicano e riportare agli agenti le attività svolte, lasciare un’arma nell’auto di un vicino e abbandonare del Semtex in una casetta da giardino.

Il giovane ha raccontato all’Irish News che la polizia minacciava di avanzare falsa accuse qualora si fosse rifiutato.

Al Hutchinson conferma che le asserzioni riportate sono molto gravi.

“Le frasi raccontate da questo giovane uomo dicono che, in numerosi livelli, la polizia ha cercato di corrompere il corso della giustizia”; dice il Police Ombudsman.

“Le azioni della polizia devono essere indagate in modo completo.

“Se la gente deve avere fiducia nel sistema della giustizia, devono essere rassicurati che la polizia non è al di sopra della legge”.

Probe into police Semtex claims

An investigation is to be launched into allegations police asked a west Belfast teenager to join a dissident republican group and plant explosives on his neighbours.

Police Ombudsman Al Hutchinson confirmed his Office will investigate claims reported in a newspaper on Tuesday that officers asked the 19-year-old to commit criminal offences in return for having shoplifting charges dropped.

The newspaper reported the young man’s claims that, while under arrest for shoplifting, police asked him to monitor a number of people, join a dissident group and report to them on its activities, plant a gun in a neighbour’s car and to leave Semtex explosives in a garden shed.

The teenager also told Irish News police threatened to lay false criminal charges against him if he refused.

Al Hutchinson said the allegations as reported were extremely serious.

“The allegations made by this young man are that at several levels police attempted to pervert the course of justice,” he said.

“The police actions must be investigated fully.

“If people are to have confidence in the criminal justice system they must be assured that the police are not above the law.”
