Punizione paramilitare lealista a Coleraine

Loyalists blamed as man shot in leg

Polizia | Police | PSNIA man who was beaten and shot after a gang of masked men burst into a house in Coleraine was targeted by loyalists, it has been claimed.

The gang of four, including two who were believed to be armed, forced their way into the property in Kingsbury Gardens at around 10.45pm on Thursday.

It is believed an 11-year-old boy and 19-year-old man were also in the house at the time of the attack. The gang attacked the 45-year-old man and shot him several times in the leg.

His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

John Dallat, SDLP MLA for the area, described the attack as an “act of thuggery”.

“This is the handywork of loyalist paramilitaries who continually seek to assert their authority over the lives of innocent people,” he said. “They don’t care if that person loses a limb.

“They’re just a scourge on society in Coleraine. We have areas where paramilitaries, in their ancient nostalgia, still believe they are in control. That has to end.”
