Il PUP ha negato che sacchetti di sabbia rubati fossero stati offerti ai residenti di East Belfast da parte dei lealisti della UVF
Il partito ha detto che le affermazioni erano “maligne e infondate”, mentre l’ex sindaco DUP Gavin Robinson ha detto di non aver visto alcuna prova di sacchetti di sabbia venduti illegalmente.
Migliaia di sacchi di sabbia sono stati distribuiti per precauzione venerdì prima di un’alta mareggiata che avrebbe dovuto inondare le abitazioni nella zona di Sydenham.
Pareti di sacchetti di sabbia sono state costruite lungo il Lagan vicino a Sydenham e nella zona del porto cittadino.
Johnny Harvey, rappresentante PUP per East Belfast, ha detto che non c’era nulla di vero nelle storie di furti organizzati e ha elogiato la comunità di East Belfast per aver lavorato insieme in una difficile esperienza.
EHa detto: “SQuesto mi sembra un altro tentativo di screditare e dividere la comunità PUL (Protestante/Unionista/Lealista), quando in realtà la comunità nel suo insieme dovrebbe ricevere elogi per gli sforzi congiunti nell’aiutarsi l’un l’altro durante questo periodo stressante”.
Il consigliere DUP Robinson ha postato un messaggio su Twitter : “Molti [sacchetti di sabbia] sono stati presi prima della distrubuzione, ma non credo ci fosse un’organizzazione a venderli”.

PUP and DUP deny claims of UVF involvement in ‘stolen sandbags’
Reports that UVF members in east Belfast were offering stolen sandbags to flood-threatened householders have been strongly denied by the PUP.
The party said the claims were “malicious and unfounded”, while former DUP lord mayor Gavin Robinson said he saw no evidence of bags being sold illegally.
Thousands of sandbags were distributed as a precaution on Friday ahead of an afternoon high tide which was expected to flood homes in the Sydenham area.
Walls of sandbags were also constructed along the Lagan adjacent to Sydenham and in the docks area of the city.
East Belfast PUP representative Jonny Harvey said there was no truth in the stories about organised thefts and praised the east Belfast community for working together throughout a difficult experience.
He said: “On the face of it, this seems like another attempt to discredit and divide the PUL (Protestant/unionist/loyalist) community, when in fact the community as a whole should be receiving nothing but praise for their combined efforts in helping each other during this stressful and testing time.”
Councillor Robinson posted a message on Twitter which said: “There were many taken prior to distribution,but I don’t believe any ‘organisation’ was selling them.”
Anyone requiring sandbags today is advised to collect them from Palmerston Road recycling centre rather than the Inverary Community Centre.
