Quattordicenne arrestato in mezzo ai disordini a Derry

Un ragazzo di 14 anni è stato arrestato per comportamento riottoso a Derry, mentre il numero due della polizia fa appello alla calma dopo 24 ore in cui disordini sono scoppiati in tutta l’Irlanda del Nord

L’adolescente è stato fermato dopo che una grande folla si era riunita ed un furgone era stato sequestrato e dato alle fiamme nella zona tra il Free Derry Corner e Fahan Street, nel Bogside.

La polizia ha anche recuperato un gran numero di bottiglie molotov durante le violenze che hanno seguito le celebrazioni unioniste del 12 di luglio.

Anche nel Waterside delle bande hanno causato disagio nella zona di Ardmore Road. Gli automobilisti sono stati avvisati di evitare la zona di Orchard Road a Strabane per i disordini scoppiati nell’area.

L’Assistente al Comandante della polizia Alistair Finlay afferma che, mentre la maggior parte delle parate in tutto il Nordirlanda sono passate pacificamente, ci sono stati problemi di ordine pubblico a Belfast, Derry e altre zone della provincia e ciò è “totalmente inaccettabile”.

“Le ultime 24 ore sono state un periodo molto difficile per le comunità e la polizia in Irlanda del Nord”, ha detto.

Ad Armagh, un gran numero di giovani si sono riuniti nell’area di Friary Road poco dopo le 21, bevendo ed incendiando pneumatici.

Poco dopo, un’autovettura è stata sequestrata e data alle fiamme in Killylea Road.

Anche a Ballymena, nel quartiere di Dunclug, un’auto è stata incendiata.

Daithi McKay, parlamentare shinner per North Antrim, ha scritto su Twitter: “Auto incendiate anella zona nord di Ballymena, un finto allarme bomba, le uniche vittime sono gli abitanti di questi quartieri”.

In precedenza alcuni giovani hanno dato fuoco ad un pneumatico e lanciato pietre nella zona di Cowen Road a Newry, intorno alle 18:30.

A Belfast un gruppo di giovani aveva incendiato una macchina in Stewart Street e lanciato pietre ed altri oggetti contro la polizia.

Deviazioni sono state create in Oxford Street, May Street, Queen Elizabeth Bridge e East Bridge Street.

L’Assistant Chief Constable Finlay prosegue: “Mentre elogio il coraggio e la leadership di molte persone nelle comuità, che hanno lavorato senza sosta per ridurre i disordini e placare le tensioni – tutti noi dobbiamo continuare a lavorare per costruire e mantenere la calma in tutta l’Irlanda del Nord.

“I miei colleghi stanno lavorando di continuo pr proteggere la comunità in Irlanda del Nord e abbiamo sufficienti risorse in campo per fare questo”.

Boy, 14, arrested amid NI disorder

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested for riotous behaviour in Londonderry, as a police chief appeals for calm after a “challenging” 24 hours in which disorder broke out across Northern Ireland.

The teen was detained after crowds gathered and a van was hijacked and burnt out in the Free Derry Corner and Fahan Street area of the Bogside.

Police have also recovered a crate of petrol bombs in the city during violence which followed annual Twelfth of July celebrations on Tuesday.

Gangs also caused unrest in the Ardmore area Road of the Waterside and motorists were advised to avoid the Orchard Road area of Strabane due to public disorder.

Assistant Chief Constable Alistair Finlay said that, while the vast majority of parades right across Northern Ireland had passed off peacefully, the public disorder that has taken place in Belfast, Derry and other parts of Northern Ireland is “totally unacceptable”.

“The past 24 hours has been a very challenging time for communities and policing in Northern Ireland,” he said.

In Armagh, a large number of youths gathered in the Friary Road area shortly after 9pm were drinking and burning tyres.

Shortly after, a car was hijacked and burnt out in the Killylea Road area of the city.

Meanwhile in Ballymena’s Dunclug estate a car has also been set on fire.

Sinn Féin MLA for North Antrim Daithí McKay tweeted: “Cars being burnt in north end of Ballymena, hoax device earlier as well, only victims of this are those who live in these neighbourhoods.”

Earlier a gang of young people set a tyre on fire and threw stones in the Cowen Road area of Newry at around 6.30pm.

In Belfast, a gang of youths torched a parked car in Stewart Street and threw stones and other missiles at police.

Diversions were put in place at Oxford Street, May Street, Queen Elizabeth Bridge and East Bridge Street.

ACC Finlay said: “Whilst I commend the bravery and leadership of many within the community who worked tirelessly to reduce the disorder and calm tensions – we need everyone to keep working to build and maintain calm across all local areas.

“My colleagues are working around the clock to protect the community right across Northern Ireland and we have sufficient resources in place to do this.”
