RAAD: “Non abbiamo niente a che fare con attacco di Creggan”

‘We had nothing to do with attack’: RAAD

Sean McMonagle, CregganRepublican Action Against Drugs (RAAD) has rubbished claims that it was responsible for a vandalism attack on a car in the Creggan area of the city last week.

The vigilante group has firmly rejected suggestions that it was behind the incident which took place outside the Rinmore Drive home of prominent Derry republican Sean McMonagle on Wednesday night last.

Mr. McMonagle, a former prisoner and Sinn Fein member, says the car was attacked by masked men wielding hammers.

He believes the vehicle was targeted because of his political views and because he has spoken out against RAAD.

However, in a statement, RAAD insisted it was, in no way, connected to the attack, branding the claims as “bar room talk”.

“RAAD wish to strongly refute the scurrilous accusations made that we were, in any way, connected to the attack,” it said in a statement. “No evidence has been provided because no evidence exists.”

The group said it had offered to meet with Mr. McMonagle on two separate occasions to “tell him we were not involved.”

RAAD also argued that many people in Creggan “know we did not commit this act” and accused “certain factions” of leading a “witch hunt”.

Its statement added: “We are not the ones trying to divide republicans. We will continue to do what we have set out to do and we stand over everything we have accomplished both publicly and privately.

“We are not criminals as some would like people to think.

“We are republicans – nothing more, nothing less.”
