Raddoppiano i reati di terrorismo in Irlanda del Nord

NI terrorism charges double

The number of people charged over terrorism offences in Northern Ireland has almost doubled, according to figures provided by the Home Office.

IRA | Irish Republican ArmyThe statistics show 31 people have been charged this year in comparison to 17 charges in 2008-2009.

The Home Office also revealed that 122 people were arrested in relation to terrorism offences in 2010, 16 more than in 2008-2009.

The figures were released in a written answer from Home Secretary Theresa May to North Antrim DUP MP Ian Paisley.

Mr Paisley said: “We can’t be complacent neither as a people, or as parliament or as a government when it comes to countering republican terrorism.

“We must be vigilant. We cannot allow ourselves to be complacent at anytime because there are those individuals in society who want to wreck the peace and wreck Northern Ireland.”

It is thought the rise in arrests and charges is related to the increase in dissident republican activity.
