L’operazione della polizia ha portato al fermo di quattro uomini, portati a Belfast
La polizia ha perquisito 15 abitazioni, compresa quella di un’importante famiglia repubblicana.
L’operazione si è svolta nella zona di Woodville a Lurgan.
Mandy Duffy, attivista repubblicana di North Armagh, ha confermato su Facebook che sono state perquisite anche le abitazioni della sua famiglia: “Eccoci di nuovo… Le case di alcuni membri della famiglia Duffy vengono perquisite fin da questa mattina presto. Basta con la polizia politicizzata in Irlanda!”.
Tre uomini sono stati fermati a Lurgan. Due di loro hanno 22 anni, il terzo ne ha 24. L’ultimo fermato, di 46 anni, è stato arrestato a Coalisland mentre la polizia perquisiva con i cani le abitazioni di Lurgan.
Tutti i quattro arrestati sono stati trasferiti a Belfast ed interrogati dalla PSNI. Il parlamentare del DUP, David Simpson, ha detto di sostenere l’operazione di sicurezza ma si è detto preoccupato per l’incremento di presunte attività legate ai repubblicani contrari al processo di pace.
Doug Bettie, parlamentare UUP, ha detto che le ricerche hanno evidenziato “l’approccio proattivo della PSNI nel danneggiare questo tipo di attività”-
La parlamentare dello Sinn Féin Catherine Seeley, invece, ha condannato chi aveva lasciato un presunto ordigno a poca distanza. “Questo allarme sicurezza e le perquisizioni non hanno portato a nulla, hanno solo provocato disagio alla comunità di Kilwilkie”, ha affermato.
La zona di Lurgan e Craigavon è una delle roccaforti dei gruppi repubblicani che si oppongono al governo condiviso nella Sei Contee. Nel 2009 un commando della Continuity IRA uccise l’agente di polizia Stephen Carroll a Craigavon. Fu il primo agente della forza di polizia riformata colpito a morte dai paramilitari repubblicani.

Security operation directed at dissident republican activity results in arrests of four men
Northern Irish police have raided 15 homes, including some belonging to a prominent Irish republican family in a security operation directed at dissident republican activity.
Four men were arrested after 15 houses were targeted by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) in the Woodville area of Lurgan, north Armagh, on Wednesday morning.
Mandy Duffy, a republican activist from North Armagh, confirmed in a Facebook post that the homes of her family were searched. “Here we go again … A number of Duffy family members’ homes currently being raided from early this morning … End British policing in Ireland!”
Three of the four men detained, two aged 22 and the other 24, were arrested in Lurgan. A 46-year-old man was detained in Coalisland in Co Tyrone while PSNI officers with dogs raided the homes in Lurgan.
All four men were taken to Belfast to be questioned by the PSNI. The Democratic Unionist MP for Upper Bann, David Simpson, said he backed the security operation but was worried about increasing reports of dissident activity in the area.
The Ulster Unionist assembly member Doug Beattie said the searches highlighted “the proactive approach the PSNI have in disrupting this type of [dissident] activity”.
Sinn Fein assemblywoman Catherine Seeley condemned those who had earlier left a suspect device nearby. “This security alert and house searches has brought nothing but disruption to the local community in the Kilwilkee estate,” she said.
The Lurgan/Craigavon area is one of the few strongholds of dissident republican groups opposed to the power-sharing settlement in Northern Ireland. In 2009 gunmen from the Continuity IRA shot dead PC Stephen Carroll in Craigavon. He was the first-ever member of the reformed PSNI to be murdered by paramilitaries.
