Rathcoole, seconda notte di disordini. Lealisti incendiano un bus guidato da una donna

L’autista ha evitato ferite ma è stata lasciata molto scossa dopo essere stata sequestrata nella seconda sera di disordini a Newtownabbey

L’autobus è stato preso alla rotatoria di Cloughfern nella serata di martedì, prima che il veicolo venisse dato alle fiame presso il quartiere di Rathcoole.

“E’ stata un’esperienza terribile e una cosa assolutamente disgraziata e vigliacca da fare”, afferma Michael Dornan del sindacato Union, che rappresenta gli autisti di autobus.

Avvertendo che i servizi saranno ritirati se gli autisti vengono messi a repentaglio, ha aggiunto: 2La gente dipende dal trasporto pubblico per andare al lavoro, a scuola, a fare acquisti – questo attacco impedisce alla gente tutto ciò”.

Sono state lanciate diverse molotov contro gli agenti di polizia in pattuglia nella zona.

L’attacco contro la lavoratrice di Translink giunge dopo che un altro autista è stato sequestrato lunedì sera – trascinato fuori dal proprio automezzo e picchiato, subendo una grave lesione al volto. All’interno dell’autobus era stata versata della benzina.

Il lavoratore comunitario Phil Hamilton accusa gli “elementi anti-sociali” per la violenza.

“Credo che ci sia un gruppo nell’area che non rappresenta nessuno”, ha riferito a Utv.

“E c’è un semplice messaggio che scaturisce – queste persone devono prendere possesso, questa è la nostra comunità che stano colpendo”.

In un appello diretto ai giovani coinvolti, e ai loro genitori, Hamilton ha aggiunto: “tutto questo deve terminare il prima possibile”.

La polizia ha chiesto a chiunque abbia influenza nella comunità di persuadere la gente dal tenere comportamenti riottosi.

Hano anche chiesto ai genitori legati alla Polizia di prendersi le responsabilità per i figli, assicurandosi non vengano coinvolti nei disordini.

Gli automobilisti sono stati avvertiti di evitare Cloughfern Corner lungo Doagh Road e Station Road.

Lunedì sei automobili ed un autobus sono stati distrutti nella violenza che ha causato danni per oltre 200.000 sterline.

Female bus driver hijacked in riot

A female bus driver has escaped injury but been left badly shaken after being hijacked during a second night of rioting in Newtownabbey.

The hijacking happened at the Cloughferm Roundabout in the town on Tuesday evening, before the vehicle was set alight near the loyalist Rathcoole estate.

“This was a terrible ordeal and an absolutely disgraceful and callous thing to do,” Michael Dornan from Unite union, which represents bus drivers, said.

Warning that services would be withdrawn while drivers were being put at risk, he added: “People depend on public transport to get to their work, their schools, to do their shopping – this attack deprives people of that.”

A number of petrol bombs have also been thrown at police patrolling the area.

The attack on the Translink worker comes after another bus driver was hijacked on Monday night – he was dragged from the vehicle and beaten, sustaining a serious facial injury. The inside of his bus was doused with petrol.

Local community worker Phil Hamilton has blamed an “anti-social element” for the violence.

“I think that there is a group within the area who don’t represent anyone,” he told UTV.

“And there’s a simple message coming out – these people need to take ownership, this is our community that they’re wrecking.”

In a direct appeal to the young people involved, and their parents, Mr Hamilton added: “This needs to stop as soon as possible.”

Police have also urged anyone with influence in the community to persuade people not to take part in the rioting and asked parents to take responsibility for their children.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the Cloughfern Corner on the Doagh Road and Station Road.
