Il padre di un ex-pilota della RAF pestato a morte dai lealisti ha chiesto un’inchiesta pubblica per verificare l’eventuale collusione della polizia con la banda di assassini
Raymond McCord junior, 22 anni, fu ucciso nel 1997 dai lealisti della UVF di Mount Vernon, North Belfast. Il suo corpo fu gettato in una cava.
L’omicidio fu al centro di un rapporto del Police Ombudsman che trovò le prove della collusione di alcuni poliziotti con la banda lealista.
Raymond McCord senior ha chiesto un’indagine indipendente sulle azioni dello Special Branch della RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary) dopo aver assistito ad un’udienza presso il tribunale di Belfast.
La morte del giovane fa parte di uno dei 56 casi relativi agli omicidi avvenuti durante i Troubles che sono ancora in attesa di un’udienza. Il giudice Weir li sta esaminando nel tentativo di identificare i punti deboli nel sistema.
Al giudice è stato detto che un’indagine sul caso McCord potrebbe durare fino a quattro anni a causa dei procedimenti giudiziari in corso che coinvolgono un prominente ex membro della UVF divenuto collaboratore di giustizia (Supergrass in inglese).
Dopo l’udienza, Raymond McCord ha detto che è “palese” il coinvolgimento dello Stato nell’omicidio di suo figlio e che avrebbe potuto impedirlo.
L’attivista per le vittime del conflitto ha detto di non avere alcuna fiducia nelle indagini della PSNI sull’omicidio.
Secondo lui l’inchiesta dovrebbe essere portata avanti da un organismo esterno, che possa anche indagare in maniera più ampia sullo Special Branch.
“È necessario portare una forza di polizia esterna e ciò che è fondamentale, dopo l’udienza di questa mattina, è un’indagine sullo Special Branch attraverso tutti i Troubles” ha detto McCord.
“Hanno istituito un’inchiesta in Inghilterra su una spia (Alexander Litvinenko) che è stata uccisa, senza alcun problema. Perché non possiamo averla qui?”

Raymond McCord calls for public inquiry into son’s murder
The father of a former RAF man beaten to death by loyalists has called for a public inquiry into the extent of police collusion with the murder gang.
Raymond McCord, 22, was killed by members of the UVF’s north Belfast Mount Vernon gang in 1997. His body was found dumped in a quarry.
The killing was at the centre of a damning report in 2007 by the Police Ombudsman which found evidence that rogue police officers colluded with the gang.
Mr McCord’s father, Raymond Snr, called for an independent probe into the actions of the RUC’s Special Branch after attending an inquest review hearing in Belfast Laganside courts.
The death is one of 56 legacy cases still awaiting hearing. Lord Justice Weir is examining each in turn in a bid to identify the logjams in the system.
The judge was told that an inquest in the McCord case could be up to four years away due to ongoing legal proceedings involving a former senior UVF member turned supergrass.
After the hearing, Mr McCord said it was “quite clear” the State was involved in his son’s murder and could have prevented it.
The high-profile victims’ campaigner said he did not have any confidence in the PSNI to investigate the murder.
He said an outside force should be brought in and a broader inquiry into Special Branch should also be established.
“What is needed is to bring an outside police force in here and what is needed, after listening to this this morning, is an inquiry into the Special Branch throughout the Troubles,” said Mr McCord.
“They have an inquiry in England about the spy (Alexander Litvinenko) that was murdered, that’s no problem – why not have it here?”
