I due uomini hanno aggredito il membro dell’Household Cavalry a Hyde Park, Londra, dove il prestigioso reggimento ha la propria base.
Il soldato è stato bloccato alle spalle da due uomini che hanno cercato di trascinarlo in un’autovettura parcheggiata appena fuori dal parco.
Ma il soldato ha reagito e ha lanciato un urlo verso altri due commilitoni a cavallo, che si sono lanciati in sua difesa dopo averlo visto lottare con i due presunti rapitori.
I due rapitori, con accento irlandese e sospettati di essere membri di Real IRA, sono corsi alla macchina e sono fuggiti. Si pensa avessero seguito il soldato in borghese da quando aveva lasciato la caserma.
L’incidente ha obbligato i responsabili dell’esercito di ordinare ai soldati di stare in guardia verso possibili tentativi di rapimento.
I soldati britannici sarebbero quindi in pericolodi essere sequestrati sia dai repubblicani irlandesi che dai fanatici musulmani.
Un ufficiale dell’esercito ha riferito: “Questo incidente è estremamente preoccupante. Se [i rapitori] fossero riusciti nel loro intento avrebbero colpito diritto al cuore l’esercito.
“Il fatto che i tentati rapitori sembrassero irlandesi è una grande preoccupazione. E’ risaputo che alcuni fanatici musulmani hanno preso di mira i soldati. La situazione è presa molto seriamente dagli alti ranghi dell’esercito, perciò è giunto l’avvertimento a tutti i reggimenti.
“Non solo la vita di questo soldato sarebbe stata in immenso pericolo, ma i terriristi avrebbero avuto una notevole propaganda.
“Fortunatamente gli aggressori non sembrano essere stati ben organizzati. Ma se avessero avuto successo sarebbe stato incredibilmente sombolico”.
I compiti della Household Cavalry includono la guardia alla Regina. Nel luglio 1982, all’apice dei Troubles, due bombe ad Hyde Park e a Regents Park uccisero otto soldati e sette cavalli.
Un portavoce del MoD dice che “questo incidente è sotto investigazione”.

Real IRA bid to kidnap soldier
The two men pounced on the Household Cavalryman in London’s Hyde Park, where his prestigious regiment is based.
They grabbed him from behind and tried to force him into a car parked just outside the park.
But the soldier fought off his attackers and shouted to two Household Cavalrymen on horses who rode over to help after seeing him struggling to escape from them.
The would-be kidnappers, who had Irish accents and are suspected of belonging to the Real IRA, ran to their car and sped off. It is feared they followed the plain-clothed soldier from his barracks.
The incident last Friday has prompted Army bosses to order soldiers to be on guard against abduction attempts.
It has raised fears that our troops are in danger of abduction by Irish dissidents as well as Muslim fanatics.
A senior military source said: “This is an extremely worrying incident that would have struck right at the heart of the Army if it had been successful.
“The fact that the would-be kidnappers appear to be Irish is a massive concern. It is already known that some Muslim fanatics have targeted soldiers. It is being taken very seriously by the higher ranks of the Army, which is why they have circulated warnings to this regiment as well as others.
“Not only would this poor soldier’s life have been in immense danger, but this would have given the terrorists a massive propaganda coup.
“Luckily the attackers don’t seem to have been very well organised. But if this had been successful it would have been massively symbolic.”
The Household Cavalry’s duties include guarding the Queen. In July 1982, at the height of the Troubles, two bombs, at Hyde Park and Regents Park, killed eight soldiers and seven horses.
An MoD spokesman said: “This incident is under investigation.”
