Real IRA dietro la morte di Denis Donaldson

La polizia nella Repubblica d’Irlanda ha ormai accertato che la Real IRA è responsabile della morte dell’ex amministratore shinner Denis Donaldson, diveuto spia per gli inglesi.

I funzionari ritengono la morte fu procurata dalla Real IRA nel tentativo di creare problemi ai Provisional IRA, inizialmente ritenuti responsabili per l’attacco.

La Gardai sta seguendo alcune linee di indagine emerse nelle ultime settimane.

Ma un importante ufficiale ha ammesso ieri sera che non sanno se queste piste porteranno ad una svolta nel caso.

Denis Donaldson, 56 anni, fu colpito quattro volte da proiettili – nel petto, al volto, in un braccio ed in una mano – nel suo cottage situato nel remoto paesino di Cloghercor, vicino a Doochary, nella Contea di Donegal, il 4 aprile 2007.

La Gardai afferma che l’indagine sulla sua morte resta “viva” e una squadra di investigatori appositamente deidcata sta lavorando a tempo pieno per risolvere il caso.

I sospetti sul coinvolgimento degli ex colleghi Provos di Donaldson sono circolate da entrambi i lati del confine per un paio di anni dopo l’attacco.

Ma come ha svelato l’indagine, la Gardai si è convinta, in base alle informazioni emerse, della responsabilità dei repubblicani.

Adesso ritengono che gli associati di un’importante membro della Real IRA nel nord-est della provincia organizzarono ed eseguirono l’agguato.

Police in the Republic are now satisfied that a faction of the Real IRA was behind the murder of former Sinn Fein administrator-turned-spy Denis Donaldson.

Officers believe that he was shot dead by Real IRA dissidents in a bid to create problems for the mainstream provisional republican movement, which was initially blamed for the attack.

Gardai are following a number of lines of inquiry that have emerged in recent weeks.

But a senior officer admitted last night that they did not know yet if these could lead to a breakthrough in the case.

Donaldson (56) was shot four times — in the chest, face, arm and hand — at his remote cottage at Cloghercor, near Doochary, Co Donegal, on April 4, 2007.

Gardai said the investigation into his death remained ‘live’ and a dedicated team of detectives was working full-time on solving the case.

Suspicions about the involvement of Donaldson’s former provisional colleagues in his death circulated on both sides of the border for a couple of years after the attack.

But as the investigation unfolded, gardai became more convinced, from emerging information, that dissidents were responsible.

They now believe that associates of a major Real IRA figure in the north west of the province organised and carried out the shooting.
