Anche la bomba all’ufficio della Città della Cultura di Derry è opera del gruppo repubblicano
La Real IRA ha ammesso la responsabilità per le bombe contro due banche in Irlanda del Nord, così come l’esplosione avvenuta all’ufficio della Città della Cultura 2013 a Derry, e ha avvertito che continueranno a colpire gli interessi economici.
In una dichiarazione al Guardian cucita con la retorica anti-capitalista, la Real IRA ha detto che le bombe e i futuri attacchi contro il sistema bancario sono la sua risposta ai banchieri ‘”avidi” e servono “per inviare il messaggio che, mentre la nazione irlandese e lotte di classe sono distinti, non sono separate”.
Gli attacchi e la lingua utilizzata nel tentativo di giustificarsi sembravano progettati per sfruttare l’avversione diffusa della gente contro le banche, su entrambi i lati del confine irlandese.
Il gruppo repubblicano è stato impenitente sull’attacco esplosivo contro l’ufficio della Città della Cultura 2013 a Derry. Ha detto che l’ufficio era un bersaglio simbolico, perché il premio “City of CUlture UK 2013” a Derry cementa il dominio britannico.
Nel suo avvertimento bellicoso contro le banche su entrambi i lati del Mare d’Irlanda e oltre i due confini, la Real IRA ha dichiarato: “L’IRA ha recentemente effettuato una serie di attacchi dinamitardi contro le istituzioni bancarie.
“Tali attacchi sono parte integrante della nostra strategia di puntare all’infrastruttura finanziaria che supporta il sistema capitalistico coloniale del governo britannico in Irlanda. La spinta a realizzare questo tipo di attacchi è direttamente collegato alle pressioni contro la classe operaia in Irlanda nel suo insieme.
“A livello di base, le comunità operaie soffrono di più gli effetti dei tagli ai servizi essenziali e la povertà è endemica. Famiglie che hanno perso reddito a causa della crisi finanziaria – causata dai banchieri – vengono intimidite e alcune vengono sfrattate dalle loro case”.
L’organizzazione ha aggiunto che “la classe dirigente di banchieri e politici sono scollegati dalle conseguenze delle loro politiche e decisioni disastrose”.
Nel mese di maggio, uomini a volto coperto ha gettato un borsone contenente un ordigno nella sede della banca Santander, nel centro di Derry. Nel mese di agosto, una bomba è stata gettata nella filiale Santander in Hill Street a Newry. L’anno scorso una bomba della Real IRA aveva provocato gravi danni alla filiale dell’Ulster Bank a Derry.
I repubblicani hanno cercato di collegare le banche al servizio di polizia dell’Irlanda del Nord. “Nelle Sei Contee, il potere effettivo del sistema coinvolge unità pesantemente armate della PSNI che, in ultima analisi, fanno rispettare il sequestro delle case, dei veicoli ecc. da parte delle banche”, afferma il gruppo. “La PSNI non è una forza di polizia, si tratta di una milizia politica e uno strumento di controllo sociale per proteggere gli interessi dell’establishment britannico, siano essi finanziari o politici”.
Nel settembre dello scorso anno, la Real IRA aveva avvertito che le banche ed i banchieri potevano diventare un obiettivo.
Così come l’attacco a Guildhall Square, Derry, della settimana scorsa, una bomba era stata lasciata nello stesso luogo il 12 ottobre dello scorso anno. L’organizzazione prevede un aumento di tali attacchi nell’avvicinamento della nomina di Derry a Città della Cultura, fra 15 mesi.
La dichiarazione della Real IRA afferma: “L’IRA ha anche effettuato attacchi esplosivi contro gli uffici della cosiddetta Città della Cultura UK nel centro di Derry. Dovrebbe essere ovvio che la nostra obiezione è incentrata sullo sfruttamento politico del nome di Derry e della cultura repubblicana. I repubblicani vedono questa farsa come un’elaborazione ben coreografata del «processo di pace» che ha portato l’ex personale IRA a lavorare come ministri britannici.
“Questa volta, si prevede l’adesione dell’intera comunità nazionalista alle celebrazioni della loro città nel Regno Unito, realizzando quindi la politica thatcheriana di considerare le sei contee «tanto inglesi quanto Finchley» (la circoscrizione elettorale della Thatcher, ndt). Espressioni di identità irlandese nel contesto del 2013 saranno effettivamente ‘licenze’ volute dagli organizzatori sotto la bandiera britannica di Città della Cultura “.
Il gruppo ha aggiunto: “Il tempismo della Città Britannica della Cultura è legata alla crisi economica: le aziende a corto di liquidi naturalmente seguono la prospettiva di maggiori entrate nel 2013, i politici sotto pressione per produrre posti di lavoro sono totalmente ubbidienti, chiunque osa obiettare viene etichettato come «dissidente». La reputazione delle nostre comunità viene tenuta al riscatto, il pensiero critico è visto come pericoloso, intere comunità sono incoraggiate ad adottare una mentalità da gregge. L’Ira continuerà sfidare tutto questo; la resistenza continuerà”.
Le bombe contro l’ufficio della Città della Cultura hanno provocato indignazione in tutta Derry, con centinaia di persone che hanno manifestato contro l’attacco.
Un rappresentante della Real IRA ha anche detto al Guardian che il vice primo ministro dello Sinn Féin, Martin McGuinness, non è sotto alcuna minaccia fisica. McGuinness, candidato alla presidenza irlandese, aveva denunciato di essere stato minacciato dai repubblicani negli ultimi anni. “Perché lo dovremmo trasformare in un cosiddetto martire?” ha spiegato il rappresentante del gruppo repubblicano.

Derry’s UK City of Culture office also targeted by dissident republican group
The Real IRA has admitted bombing two banks in Northern Ireland as well as the UK City of Culture office in Derry, and has warned that it will continue to target economic interests.
In a statement to the Guardian laced with anti-capitalist rhetoric, the Real IRA said the bombings and future targeting of the banking system were its response to bankers’ “greed” and were meant “to send out the message that while the Irish national and class struggles are distinct, they are not separate”.
The attacks and the language used in attempting to justify them appeared designed to tap into the widespread public loathing of the banks on both sides of the Irish border.
The republican dissident group was unapologetic about bombing the office of the UK City of Culture 2013 in Derry last week. It said the office was a symbolic target because the City of Culture award to Derry underpinned British rule.
In its most bellicose warning yet to the banks on both sides of the Irish Sea and the border, the Real IRA said: “The IRA has recently carried out a number of bomb attacks on the banking establishment.
“Such attacks are an integral part of our strategy of targeting the financial infrastructure that supports the British government’s capitalist colonial system in Ireland. The impetus to carry out this type of attack is directly linked to pressure from working-class communities in Ireland as a whole.
“At a grassroots level, working-class communities are suffering most from the effects of cuts to essential services and poverty is now endemic. Families who have lost income as a result of the financial crisis – caused by the bankers – are being intimidated and some are being evicted from their homes.”
The organisation added that “the ruling class of bankers and politicians are disconnected from the consequences of their disastrous policies and decisions”.
In May, masked men threw a holdall containing a device into Santander’s branch in Derry city centre. In August, a bomb was thrown into Santander in Hill Street, Newry. A Real IRA bomb caused major damage to a branch of the Ulster Bank in Derry last year.
The terror group attempted to link the banks to the Police Service of Northern Ireland. “In the six counties, the effective power of the system is vested in heavily armed PSNI units who, ultimately, enforce bank repossessions of homes, vehicles, etc,” it said. “The PSNI is not a police force, it is a political militia and a social control tool designed to protect the interests of the British establishment whether financial or political.”
In September last year, the Real IRA had issued a warning that banks and bankers could be targeted.
As well as the attack in Derry’s Guildhall Square last week, a bomb was left there on 12 October last year. The organisation predicted such incidents in the runup to Derry becoming a City of Culture in 15 months’ time.
The Real IRA statement said: “The IRA has also carried out bombing operations against the so-called UK City of Culture offices in Derry city centre. It should be obvious that our objection is focused on the political exploitation of Derry’s name and culture. Republicans view this charade as an elaboration of the well-choreographed ‘peace process’ which resulted in former IRA personnel serving as British ministers.
“This time, the whole nationalist community is expected to join in celebrations of their place within the United Kingdom and thereby realise the Thatcherite policy of regarding the six counties as being ‘as British as Finchley’. Expressions of Irish identity within the context of 2013 will be effectively ‘licensed’ by the organisers under the banner UK City of Culture.”
The group added: “The timing of the UK City of Culture is linked to the economic crisis: cash-strapped businesses naturally follow the carrot of increased revenue in 2013, politicians under pressure to produce jobs are totally compliant, anyone who objects is smeared or labelled a ‘dissident’. The goodwill of our communities is being held to ransom, critical thinking is seen as dangerous, whole communities are being encouraged to adopt a herd mentality. The IRA will continue to challenge this; resistance will continue.”
The bombing of the City of Culture office caused outrage throughout Derry and beyond, with hundreds demonstrating against the attack.
A Real IRA representative also told the Guardian that the Sinn Féin deputy first minister, Martin McGuinness, was under no physical threat. McGuinness, a candidate for the Irish presidency, has claimed his life has been under threat from republican dissidents in recent years. “Why would we turn him into a so-called martyr?” the Real IRA representative said.
