Il Dublin City Council ha rivelato che una serie di slogan della CIRA sono state dipinti sui muri nella zona nord della città nelle ultime settimane.
Tuttavia, gli slogan sono stati prontamente rimossi.
In una relazione, il Consiglio ha detto che sta continuando a lavorare sulla rimozione dei graffiti insieme al Probation Service e a P Mac, titolare dell’appalto.
“C’è stata un’ondata di slogan politici della CIRA nella zona centrale, in particolare nella zona interna a nord-est”, ha riferito il Consiglio.
“Tutti questi graffiti sono stati rimossi dal nostro contraente aziendale e stiamo continuando a rimuovere questi slogan entro le 24 ore dalla ricezione delle denuce”, ha aggiunto.
Il consigliere indipendente Christy Burke ha detto all’Herald di aver notato graffiti CIRA in giro per la città, aggiungendo che devono far parte di “una campagna di reclutamento”.
“Ne ho visti un po’” ha affermato. “E’ ovviamente una folla nella zona in cui sono attivi.”
Ha aggiunto che “è difficile sapere” se i graffiti avranno effetto sui giovani della zona. Tuttavia, egli ritiene gli autori sono opportunistici e non è come “stare in piedi agli angoli tenendo incontri di assunzione”.
Slogan
Tra i luoghi in cui sono stati osservati gli slogan anche Mountjoy Street, Summerhill e Ossory Road.
Il consiglio comunale ha detto di aver cancellato un totale di 450 metri quadrati di graffiti il mese scorso.
L’iniziativa Probation Service consente al Consiglio di assumere carcerati – che hanno ricevuto una condanna a svolgere lavori socialmente utili – per la rimozione di graffiti. Gravi delinquenti o criminali pericolosi non vengono presi in considerazione per il lavoro.
Una delle condizioni dell’iniziativa graffiti è che non si svolga su case popolari e appartamenti.
La squadra è composta da un supervisore, un impiegato civile industriale, cinque operatori, un furgone, una potente macchina per lavare, estensioni dei rulli e prodotti chimici.
I funzionari del Probation Service eseguono la formazione e la supervisione.
Il progetto è stato avviato a Dublino lo scorso anno.
L’ex ministro della Giustizia Dermot Ahern ha dichiarato: “Purtroppo, i graffiti sono una caratteristica di tutte le principali città.”

Upsurge in graffiti triggers fears of CIRA ‘recruit’ bid
Dublin City Council has revealed a series of CIRA slogans have been spray-painted on walls in the north inner city in recent weeks.
However, the slogans have been promptly removed.
In a report, the council said it was continuing to work on graffiti removal with the Probation Service and its own corporate contractor, P Mac.
“There was a spate of political CIRA slogans in the central area, most notably in the north east inner city,” the council said.
“All of these have been removed by our corporate contractor and we are continuing to remove these slogans within 24 hours of receiving reports,” it added.
Independent councillor Christy Burke told the Herald he had noticed CIRA graffiti around the city, adding that they must be on “a recruitment drive”.
“I have seen a few bits,” he said. “It’s obviously a crowd in the area that are active.”
He added that it is “hard to know” whether the graffiti would have an effect on young people in the area. However, he feels the perpetrators are opportunistic and it is not like they are “standing on corners having recruitment meetings”.
Slogans
Among the places he observed slogans were Mountjoy Street, Summerhill and Ossory Road.
The council said it removed a total of 450 square metres of graffiti last month.
The Probation Service initiative allows the council to hire offenders — who have received a community service sentence from the courts — as graffiti removers. Serious offenders or dangerous criminals are not considered for the scheme.
One of the conditions of the graffiti initiative is that it is not carried out on council houses and flats.
The team consists of a supervisor, an industrial civil servant, five operatives a van and power washer and rollers extension poles and chemicals.
Probation Service officials carry out the training and supervision.
The scheme began in the city council area early last year.
Former Justice Minister Dermot Ahern said: “Sadly, graffiti is a feature of all major cities.”
