Reg Empey: durante i colloqui, DUP-SF mi hanno tagliato fuori

Sir Reg Empey dovette lasciare una mastodontica riunione dell’esecutivo prima che finisse, perché il DUP e lo Sinn Fein avevano iniziato una lunga trattativa privata nel corso dell’incontro

Sir Reg ha detto che la “solita routine” dei colloqui in una sala diversa tra DUP e Sinn Feinaveva lasciato lui, i suoi colleghi dell’UUP Michael McGimpsey, ministro della Sanità, ed il ministro per lo Sviluppo Sociale Alex Attwood, SDLP, da soli attorno al tavolo dell’esecutivo per lunghi periodi.

Mentre il DUP e lo Sinn Fein negoziavano in privato in merito al piano, più volte in fase di stallo, per creare 11 “super consigli”, i due ministri UUP alla fine hanno dovuto lasciare a causa di impegni precedenti.

“E’ stata la solita routine in cui loro (DUP e SF, Ndt) se ne vanno e ci lasciano”, ha detto il ministro per l’Occupazione e l’Apprendimento.

“Lo Sinn Fein vuole ottenere il modello composto da 11-Consigli ma, a parte il fatto che non siamo mai stati a favore, noi non crediamo che il governo locale, al momento, sia pronto per questo”.

Roy Beggs, parlamentare UUP, ha detto che l’incapacità di prendere una decisione sulla riforma del governo locale “aggiungerà solo l’incredulità della gente alla disfunzionalità dell’esecutivo.

“Questo catalogo di fallimenti ha sprecato ingenti somme di denaro pubblico – per lo meno 9.000.000 di sterline a carico del bilancio di Stormont”, ha detto.

Un portavoce del DUP ha rifiutato di commentare.

SIR Reg Empey had to leave a mammoth meeting of the executive before it ended because the DUP and Sinn Fein had gone off for extended private negotiations during the meeting, the UUP leader has said.

Sir Reg said that the “usual routine” of side room DUP-Sinn Fein talks had left himself, fellow UUP health minister Michael McGimpsey and the SDLP’s social development minister Alex Attwood alone around the executive table for protracted periods.

As the DUP and Sinn Fein negotiated in private about the repeatedly stalled plan to create 11 “super councils”, the two UUP ministers eventually had to leave because of prior commitments, Sir Reg said.

“It was the usual routine where they clear off and leave us,” the employment and learning minister said.

“Sinn Fein are bursting to get the 11-council model through but, apart from the fact that we have never been in favour of the 11-council model, we just don’t believe that local government is ready for this at the moment.”

UUP MLA Roy Beggs said that the inability to make a decision on local government reform “will only add to the public’s disbelief at the dysfunctionality of the executive”.

“This catalogue of failure has wasted significant amounts of public money – at the very least, £9 million out of the Stormont budget,” he said.

A DUP spokesman declined to comment.
