I repubblicani dissidenti sarebbero pronti a colpire la conferenza dei Tories di questo autunno, ha avvertito un parlamentare
L’avvertimento giunge in seguito ad un aumento della violenza e degli attacchi esplosivi nelle ultime settimane, compresi assalti contro stazioni di polizia e personale delle forze di sicurezza.
Mercer, ex presidente del sottocomitato sull’anti terrorismo alla House of Commons, ha affermato: “Nelle ultime tre o quattro settimane in Irlanda del Nord ci sono stati sforzi molto determinati per uccidere.
“Ci sono tre gruppi (paramilitari) in Nordirlanda che stanno pianificando qualcosa che li catapulti sulle prime pagine prima della stagione delle conferenze di partito.
“Vogliono uccidere prima della fine del mese. Hanno l’aspirazione di attaccare obiettivi in Inghilterra, compresa la conferenza del Conservative Party”.
Il parlamentare, che fu impiegato in Irlanda del Nord, ha detto che la notizia gli è giunta da persone con cui ha operato.
Quando gli è stato chiesto le probabilità di un attacco alla conferenza di Birmingham in ottobre, Mercer ha risposto: “Non ritengo siano in grado di condurre attacchi in Inghilterra al momento, ma vorrebbero farlo”.
A inizio mese una guardia di una stazione di polizia non è rimasto ferito quando un’autobomba è esplosa parzialmente mentre andava a lavorare attraversando una zona residenziale molto popolata.
Tre bambine sono rimaste ferite a Lurgan questa settimana per l’esplosione di un cassonetto dell’immondizia durante le perquisizioni della polizia. Si sarebbe trattato del tentativo di tendere una trappola agli afenti.
E numerose stazioni di polizia sono diventate obiettivo di attacchi, compresa quella di Strand Road a Derry, dove una bomba da 200 libbre (circa 90 kg) era stata lasciata davanti all’ingresso da un tassista sequestrato insieme alla sua vettura.
Gli agenti di polizia stavano evacuando l’area quando è esploso l’ordigno, causando danni alla stazione di polizia pesantemente fortificata e agli edifici circostanti.
L’Assistant Chief Constable Drew Harris ha detto che la minaccia repubblicana resta alta, con oltre 30 attacchi registrati finora nel 2010. Ma l’alto ufficiale ha riferito che la PSNI ha eseguito 147 arresti, sfociati in 38 accuse, contro le 19 dello scorso anno.
Laurence Robertson, presidente dei Conservative del Northern Ireland Select Committee, afferma che parlare di attacchi in Inghilterra è “profondamente preoccupante”.
Ha riferito all’Observer: “Fino ad ora era contenuto nella provincia ma se sia qui o in Inghilterra è molto preoccupante.
“Speriamo non sia un altro capitolo ma dovrebbe e deve essere combattuto”.

Dissidents ‘targeting’ Tory conference
Dissident republicans are targeting the Conservative Party conference this autumn, an MP has warned.
The warning comes amid a recent upsurge of violence and bomb incidents in recent weeks, including outside police stations and against security force personnel.
Mr Mercer, former chairman of the Commons subcommittee on counter-terrorism, said:”Over the last three or four weeks there have been several very determined efforts to kill in Northern Ireland.
“There are three groups in Northern Ireland which are planning to do something to catapult themselves into the headlines before the party conference season.
“They wish to kill by the end of the month.They have an aspiration to attack targets on the mainland, including the Conservative Party conference.”
The MP, who served in Northern Ireland, said the intelligence came from people he used to serve with.
Asked how likely an attack was at the conference in Birmingham in October, Mr Mercer added:”I don’t believe these groups are capable of carrying out attacks on the mainland at the moment, but they would like to.”
Earlier this month a police station guard escaped unharmed after a car bomb partially exploded as he drove to work through a busy residential area.
Three children were also injured in Lurgan last week after a device exploded in a wheelie bin as police searched part of the town. It is believed to have been an attempt to lure officers into a trap.
And several police stations have also been targeted, including Strand Road in Londonderry to where a 200lb bomb was driven by a hijacked taxi driver.
Officers were evacuating the area when the device exploded, causing damage to the heavily fortified station, plus surrounding buildings including a nursing home and apartments.
Assistant Chief Constable Drew Harris said the dissident threat remained high, with more than 30 attacks recorded so far this year. But the senior officer said police had made 147 arrests in 2010, resulting in 38 charges, compared with 19 charges last year.
Laurence Robertson, the Conservative chairman of the Northern Ireland Select Committee, said suggestions of an attack on the mainland were “extremely worrying”.
He told The Observer:”So far it has been contained to the province but whether it is there or on the mainland it is very worrying.
“We hope it is not yet another chapter but it could be and has to be dealt with.”
