Dissident republicans ‘behind car bomb in Crossmaglen’

Dissident republicans are being blamed for a car bomb attack on a police station in County Armagh.

Crossmaglen police stationThe car, packed with containers filled with flammable liquid, was abandoned at the gates of Crossmaglen police station on Saturday night.

A controlled explosion was carried out on Sunday afternoon.

Chief Inspector Sam Cordner said if the bomb had exploded, anyone in the immediate area could have been killed or seriously injured.

“Whoever is responsible showed complete disregard for the lives of police officers and members of the local community,” Chief Inspector Cordner said.

“I would like to place on record my thanks to local people and their representatives for their patience and support during the operation to make this device safe.”

The SDLP MLA, Dominic Bradley said there is anger in the local community:”People are totally disgusted by this action.

“People in Crossmaglen have had over 30 years of this type of thing and I think they’re sick, sore and tired of it.

“The actions of these people, rather than win support for their cause only serves to strengthen the resolve of local people to continue to work for peace on a day-in daily basis.”

Police appealed for anybody with information about the red Peugeot 406 car to contact them.

The police station has been attacked a number of times in recent months.
