Martin O’Neill, membro del 32 County Sovereignty Movement, ha rigettato le frasi del comandante della zona di Foyle, Chris Yates, secondo cui “una o due” persone erano state fermate “tra le 6 e le 8 volte in un periodo di tre mesi”.
Le informazioni del comandante dalla polizia sono state fornite, in risposta ad una richiesta scritta, durante un recente incontro del District Policing Partnership (DPP).
O’Neill ha affermato di essere stato personalmente sottoposto a 24 fermi negli ultimi tre mesi. Afferma di conoscere altri repubblicani nelle sue stesse condizioni.
Ha mostrato al Derry Journal i documenti che gli sono stati consegnati dalla PSNI ogni volta che è stato fermato.
O’Neill si è detto sorpreso del commento dell’ispettore capo Yates.
“O l’ispettore Chris Yates si è sbagliato oppure non sa cosa stanno facendo i suoi agenti. Sono stato fermato 24 volte negli ultimi due mesi e mezzo. La maggior parte delle volte sono stato fermato mentre ero al lavoro come tassista, alcune volte mentre avevo clienti a bordo, e non sono mai stato arrestato perché la polizia non ha mai trovato nulla”, ha affermato O’Neill.
Il repubblicano ha anche chiesto ai membri del DPP di Derry di spiegare l’apparente discrepanza con le affermazioni di Chris Yates.
“E’ questa l’affidabilità di cui parlano lo Sinn Fein ed i suoi lavoratori comunitari? Il DPP dice di poter fornire responsabilità, ma dov’è la responsabilità in cifre che non sono per nulla accurate?” chiede O’Neill.
Republican rejects stop and search figures
Martin O’Neill, a member of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement, has rejected Foyle area commander Chris Yates’ claim that “one or two” individuals had been stopped “between 6-8 times over a three month period.”
The area commander’s information was provided in an answer to a written question to a recent District Policing Partnership meeting.
Mr O’Neill says he personally has been stopped 24 times in the last three months. He says he knows other republicans who are in a similar position.
He showed the ‘Journal’ documents given to him by the PSNI each time he has been searched.
Mr O’Neill said he was surprised when he read chief inspector Yates’ comments.
“Either Chris Yates has got it wrong or he does not know what his officers are doing. I have been stopped 24 times in just over two and a half months. Most of the times I was stopped when I was working as a taxi driver, sometimes when I had a fare in the car, and I was not arrested once and the police never found anything,” he said.
He also challenged members of Derry’s DPP to explain the apparent discrepancy in Chris Yates’ claims.
“Is this the accountability that Sinn Féin and their community worker proxies tell us about? The DPP say they can deliver accountability but where is the accountability in figures that are not accurate,” he asked.
