Comunicato di Ronan Moyne Ard Runai, Republican Network for Unity
Gli attivisti di Republican Network for Unity erano presenti presso i negozi di Ardoyne e a Brompton Park dalle prime ore del 13 luglio e hanno cercato immediatamente, in sostegno ai residenti di Ardoyne, di iniziare una protesta pacifica al primo segno dell’ammassamento della RUC/PSNI. Allo stesso tempo i nostri attivisti hanno fatto le loro rimostranze contro i giovani che stavano iniziando a rispondere a questa provocazione paramilitare.
I membri di Republican Network for Unity hanno cercato di confrontarsi con i giovani che stavano diventando estremamente agitati per le azioni aggressive della RUC/PSNI. Abbiamo parlato con loro, non nello stile che utilizza solitamente il Provisional Sinn Fein, che li rimprovera ed li intimidisce fino alla remissività, invece noi li abbiamo incoraggiati a considerare il modo più costruttivo per focalizzare la rabbia e li abbiamo esortati ad essere coscienti dell’impatto negativo che ci sarebbe stato se fossero riusciti a prevenire il passaggio delle marce dell’Orange Order attraverso la loro comunità.
Ci sono molti testimoni oculari insieme a riprese filmate o fotografiche dove si può osservare che il Republican Network for Unity, insieme con altri attivisti repubblicani, ha cercato di ragionare con i giovani, giungendo ad incrociare le braccia nel tentativo pacifico di impedire alla PSNI di avanzare. Questo ha portato alcune persone a finire sotto il lacio di pietre da una parte e dall’essere picchiato durante una delle tante cariche della RUC/PSNI.
I mezzi di informazione hanno poi intervistato Gerry Kelly (chiaramente coordinato con Nelson McCausland del DUP, Frankie Gallagher dell’UPRG e l’ufficio stampa della PSNI) riportando poco o nulla della verità sugli eventi della giornata, tranne dire che c’erano stati dei grossi disordini. Gerry Kelly ha puntato il dito contro qualsiasi gruppo Repubblicano gli veniva in mente al momento. E’ anche andato oltre, facendo i nomi di alcuni Repubblicani in una maniera subdola, non comprovata e sinistra.
E’ difficile capire come Gerry Kelly possa dire che i disordini sono stati orchestrati da “dissidenti repubblicani trasportati nel quartiere” o identificare la persona armata e la sua presunta appartenenza alla RIRA quando lui, insieme ad un considerevole numero di suoi colleghi di West Belfast, se ne stava rintanato a mangiare nel Crumlin Star Social Club mentre i fatti in questione avvenivano sulle strade – uscendo solamente quando è venuto a conoscenza della presenza di un giornalista o di un cameraman.
Il semplice fatto è che là non c’erano gli “uomini neri” e neppure “i padrini paramilitari” ad incoraggiare, orchestrare o facilitare i giovani di Ardoyne alla lotta. Questi giovani sono stati esasperati dall’invasione della PSNI/RUC e dall’imminente arrivo dell’Orange Order – e hanno risposto, con la rabbia e la frustrazione, tentando di allontanare la RUC/PSNI dalla loro comunità. Se si sentivano in quel modo, come chiaramente mostrato, il Republican Network for Unity ritiene abbiano fatto bene a resistere. Gerry Kelly deve scendere dal mondo del ministro junior britannico a Stormont, e stare in contatto una volta di più con la vera base dei giovani repubblicani e sondare il terreno in aree economicamente depresse ed oppresse come Ardoyne.
Fino al momento in cui quei giovani non saranno impegnati in maniera significativa… non demonizzati, fino a quando non avremo comunità nazionaliste libere da marce trionfaliste e suprematiste e ci sarà ancora una forza di polizia britannica paramilitare continueremo a vedere le scene di cui siamo stati testimoni non solo ad Ardoyne ma in tutte le sei contee nelle ultime due notti. La parate contenziose dell’Orange Order forzate a passare attraverso le comunità nazionaliste mostrano una completa mancanza di considerazione per qualsiasi forma di “parità di stima”, questa è la ragione fondamentale per i disordini – senza badare alle prevedibili dichiarazioni opportunistiche e buone solo per i mezzi di comunicazione rilasciate da Gerry Kelly.
Republican Network for Unity Reject Provisional Sinn Fein Claims

Republican Network for Unity activists were present at the Ardoyne shops and Brompton Park from early in the day of the 13th of July and immediately attempted, in support of Ardoyne residents, to initiate a peaceful protest at the first sign of the massed ranks of armed RUC/PSNI. At the same time our activists were also remonstrating with the local youth who were beginning to respond to this paramilitary provocation.
Republican Network for Unity members attempted to engage with the youths who were clearly becoming extremely agitated at such aggressive RUC/PSNI actions. We spoke with them, not in the style that they have came to expect from Provisional Sinn Fein, that is to berate and intimidate them into submission, instead we encouraged them to consider the most constructive way that they could focus their anger and urged them to be mindful of the negative impact this could have in being able to actually prevent the Orange Orders march of hate through their community.
There is ample eye witness evidence along with photographic and film footage which can verify that the Republican Network for Unity along with other republican activists tried to reason with the youths, as well as linking arms in an attempt to peacefully prevent the PSNI from advancing. This resulted in a number of people having to avoid incoming stones whilst at the same time they were being beaten during one of the many RUC/PSNI baton charges.
The media interviews following on from this by Gerry Kelly (clearly co-ordinated with the DUPs Nelson Mc Causland, UPRGs Frankie Gallagher and the RUC/PSNI press office) bare little if any truth reflecting the day’s events….other in that there was a sustained riot. Gerry Kelly blamed every Republican grouping his mind could recollect at the time. He later went onto name and blame individual Republicans in a very underhand, unsubstantiated and sinister fashion.
It is difficult to understand how Gerry Kelly either could say that the trouble was orchestrated by ‘Dissidents bussed into the area’ or come to identify the gunperson and his/her alleged affiliation to the “RIRA” as he himself was cocooned, along with a sizeable number of his West Belfast colleagues, at a buffet in the Crumlin Star social club as these events were unfolding on the streets – only venturing out when he was made aware of a reporter or camera crew.
The simple fact is that there were no ‘bogey men’ no ‘paramilitary godfathers’ encouraging, orchestrating or facilitating the youth of Ardoyne to riot. These youths were incensed at the encroachment of the PSNI/RUC and the imminent arrival of the Orange order – and responded, through their anger and frustration, by attempting to force the RUC/PSNI out of their community. If they felt this way, which they clearly did, then the Republican Network for Unity believes that they were right to resist. Gerry Kelly needs to come down from the world of a British junior minister in Stormont, once more get in touch with the real base of Republican youth and sentiment on the ground in economically deprived and oppressed areas such as Ardoyne.
Until such time as these youth are engaged with in a meaningful fashion….not demonised, until such time that we have Nationalist communities free from triumphalist, supremacist marches and a British paramilitary ‘police’ force we will have scenes such as those witnessed not only in Ardoyne but throughout the six counties over the past two nights. Contentious Orange marches forced through Nationalist communities show a complete disregard for any form of ‘parity of esteem’, this is the underlying reason for the trouble – regardless of Gerry Kelly’s predictably opportunistic and self serving media utterances.
