Cinque appartenenti al Republican Sinn Féin della zona di Lurgan/Craigavon sono stati arrestati il 2 aprile 2014.
Fin dalle 5:45 di mattina l’area è stata invasa da membri della RUC/PSNI pesantemente armati, accompagnati dai membri dello Special Branch in abiti civili. Perquisizioni di alcune abitazioni nazionaliste e cinque arresti sono stati compiuti. Alcuni mobili sono stati danneggiati all’interno delle abitazione e in una casa in costruzione gli agenti hanno scavato il cemento delle fondamenta.
Computer e telefoni sono stati portati via e in una casa un membro della RUC ha preso il computer che veniva utilizzato da un bambino per gli esami. Sono stati prelevati anche documenti.
Durante il raid a Drumbeg il figlio di sette anni di uno dei proprietari delle abitazioni perquisite è andato verso la macchina della madre per recuperare il suo cappotto. Un membro della RUC/PSNI con l’arma in pugno è andato alla macchina e ha cercato di perquisire il bambino, quando la madre è uscita di casa impedendo tale operazione.
Nel corso della giornata due membri del Republican Sinn Féin non hanno potuto visitare un prigioniero repubblicano a Maghaberryperché un cane poliziotto si è seduto accanto alla donna. Il comportamento del cane è stato indotto dalla stretta al guinzaglio prodotto dalle guardie carcerarie.
Un portavoce del Republican Sinn Féin ha detto che è lampante che gli arresti e le confische di telefoni cellulari e computer siano politicamente motivati, nel tentativo di danneggiare l’organizzazione delle Commemorazioni di Pasqua a Lurgan. Il Republican Sinn Féin condanna questi arresti e promette che non fermeranno le preparazioni per la Commemorazione di Pasqua che avverrà il sabato Santo a Lurgan.
RSF: Arrests of Republican Sinn Féin members ‘politically motivated’
Five members of Republican Sinn Féin in the Lurgan/Craigavon area of Co Armagh were arrested on April 2, 2014.
The area was flooded with heavily-armed members of the RUC/PSNI, accompanied by plain-clothes Special Branch/MI5 from 5.45am. Raids were carried out in several nationalist homes and five arrests were made. Items of furniture were damaged in some homes and in one home in an outbuilding under construction the concrete foundation was dug up.
Computers and phones were taken and in one house a member of the RUC went through the computer a child was using for his exams. Documents were also taken.
During the raid in Drumbeg the seven-year-old son of one of the households went to his mother’s car to get his coat. A heavily-armed member of the RUC/PSNI with his gun in his hand ran over to the car and was about to search the child when the mother ran out of the house and prevented him from carrying out the search.
Later in the day two members of Republican Sinn Féin were prevented from visiting a POW in Maghaberry when the sniffer-dog sat down beside the woman. The usual pull of the chain by the prison warders ensured the dog sat down beside the woman.
A spokesperson for Republican Sinn Féin said that is was quite obvious that the arrests and the confiscation of mobile phones and computers was politically motivated in an attempt to disrupt the organisation of the Easter Commemoration in Lurgan. Republican Sinn Féin condemns these arrests and promises that it will not deter preparations for the Easter Commemoration on Holy Saturday in Lurgan.
