Padre Donegan ha accolto positivamente il ritorno della statua della Vergine Maria, sottratta e messa sulla catasta di un bonfire a West Belfast
Le immagini raffiguranti la statua sul bonfire di Lanark Way hanno subito fatto il giro della rete fin dalle prime ore di giovedì.
In seguito la statua è stata restituita a padre Gary Donegan, rettore della Holy Cross Church, da un membro della comunità prima che il bonfire fosse acceso.
“La sera dell’11 luglio, con le tensioni in aumento, questo atto incredibilmente responsabile dimostra che ci sono leader comunitari impegnati a compiere passi positivi verso la pace” ha detto il prete cattolico.
“La persona che ha restituito la statua ha affermato che le persone di Shankill non intendevano offendere i cattolici in un momento così volatile”.
Ha continuato padre Donegan: “Dalle informazioni attendibili che ho ricevuto sembra che la statua fosse stata messa sul bonfire da solo 10 minuti quando è stata fotografata, ma è stata immediatamente rimossa dai leader della comunità, ben consci dell’offesa che questo incidente poteva provocare.
“Questo tipo di comportamento rispettoso e responsabile deve essere accolto con favore. Mi voglio sdebitare per questo atto di buona volontà”.

Virgin Mary statue on bonfire returned
A Catholic priest has welcomed the return of a statue of the Virgin Mary after it was defaced and put on an Eleventh night bonfire in west Belfast.
Pictures of the statue on a bonfire at Lanark Way were published on Twitter earlier on Thursday.
Later it was returned to Fr Gary Donegan, Rector of Holy Cross Church by a member of the local community before the bonfire was lit.
“On the 11th Night with tensions rising, this incredibly responsible act proves that there are leaders within our communities who remain committed to taking positive steps for peace,” Fr Donegan said.
“The person who returned the statue said that the people of the Shankill did not want to cause offence to ordinary Catholics at a very volatile time.”
He continued: “From reliable information received it appears that this statue was only on the bonfire for ten minutes before it was photographed, but it was then removed immediately by responsible community leaders who were aware of the offence this incident would cause.
“This kind of respectful and responsible leadership can only be welcomed. Again, I remain indebted to your act of goodwill and concern.”
