Retromarcia del DUP sul doppio incarico

Il DUP è stato accusato di inversione a U dopo che Peter Robinson ha suggerito che i parlamentari eletti a Westminster potranno presentarsi anche alle elezioni per l’Assemblea di Stormont

In un’intervista rilasciata al News Letter, il leader del DUP ha detto che sarebbe manifestamente ingiusto se il suo partito ritirasse i grandi nomi dei suoi parlamentari dalle elezioni del prossimo anno ma gli altri partiti non facessero la stessa cosa.

Lo Sinn Fein, i cui deputati non prendono possesso del seggio a Westminister ma fanno pieno uso dei generosi salari di Westminster, presenterà la maggior parte dei suoi parlamentari nelle elezioni dell’Assemblea del prossimo anno.

Robinson ha detto che sarà l’esecutivo del suo partito a decidere se i parlamentari del DUP – molti dei quali hanno lasciato l’Assemblea negli ultimi mesi per concentrarsi su Westminster – sono autorizzati a candidarsi.

Ma le osservazioni di Robinson sono state contestate dallo Sinn Fein e dal TUV, che lo accusano di un voltafaccia politico.

In una dichiarazione, il leader del TUV Jim Allister ha evidenziato il commento di Robinson, rilasciato prima delle elezioni generali di maggio, in cui disse che “… tutti i nostri membri dell’Assemblea eletti a Westminster cederanno il proprio posto nell’Assemblea”.

L’onorevole Allister ha detto: “Ancora oggi al News Letter Robinson suggerisce che il DUP permetterà ai parlamentari (di Westmister) di candidarsi per l’Assemblea.”

L’ex eurodeputato del DUP ha detto che i commenti di Robinson sono stati “oltraggiosi” e pari a “una flagrante violazione della promessa del DUP di porre fine alla pratica del doppio incarico”.

Il parlamentare dello Sinn Fein per North Antrim, Daithi McKay, ha accusato il DUP di “inversione a U”.

“Dato il continuo impegno da parte del DUP per far naufragare l’attuale legislatura in assemblea vietando il doppio incarico… adesso è una piccola sorpresa che Peter Robinson indichi come i parlamentari del DUP che hanno lasciato l’assemblea con una grande fanfara saranno davveroinseriti nella lista del DUP per le elezioni di maggio”.

DUP ‘U-turn’ on double-jobbing

THE DUP has been accused of a U-turn after Peter Robinson suggested that his MPs may run again for the assembly.

In an interview with the News Letter, the DUP leader said that it would be manifestly unfair if his party withdrew its big-name MPs from next year’s elections but other parties do not.

Sinn Fein, whose MPs do not take their Westminister seats but make full use of Westminster’s generous allowances, is running most of its MPs in next year’s assembly election.

Mr Robinson said that it would be for his party’s executive to decide whether DUP MPs — many of whom have left the assembly in recent months to concentrate on Westminster — are allowed to return.

But Mr Robinson’s comments were seized upon by Sinn Fein and the TUV, who accused him of a policy about-turn.

In a statement, TUV leader Jim Allister highlighted Mr Robinson’s comment before May’s general election in which he said that “…any of our assembly members elected to Westminster will give up their assembly seats”.

Mr Allister said: “Yet today in the News Letter Mr Robinson suggests that the DUP will allow MPs to run for election to the assembly.”

The former DUP MEP said that Mr Robinson’s comments were “outrageous” and amounted to “a flagrant breach of the DUP’s pledge to end the practice of double-jobbing.”

North Antrim Sinn Fein MLA Daithi McKay accused the DUP of a ‘U-turn”.

“Given the ongoing efforts by the DUP to scupper the current legislation in the assembly banning double-jobbing…it will come as little surprise that Peter Robinson is now indicating that the DUP MPs who left the assembly in a great fanfare will indeed be slotted onto the DUP ticket in the May elections.”
