L’attivista americano per i diritti civili Jesse Jackson è in Irlanda del Nord per partecipare ad una serie di incontri a Belfast e Derry
Si è recato anche alla Mercy School.
Alex Maskey, parlamentare dello Sinn Fein, ha affermato: “Sono felice dell’arrivo a South Belfast del leggendario leader americano per i diritti civili, il reverendo Jesse Jackson. E’ stato un grande ambasciatore per il processo di pace irlandese e fonte di ispirazione per chi lotta per la giustizia e l’uguaglianza in tutto il mondo”.
Maskey ha descritto il ministro battista come “una delle figure più importanti della nostra epoca”.
Nel 1968 il reverendo Jesse Jackson era presente sul balcone di Memphis con Martin Luther King quando fu assassinato.
Jackson fu un candidato del partito democratico statunitense nella corsa alle primarie presidenziali nel 1984 e nel 1988.
Il gruppo nordirlandese Relatives for Justice ha previsto un incontro con le vittime dei Troubles provenienti da entrambe le comunità.
Domenica il reverendo sarà a Derry per un’alra serie di incontri, compreso uno presso il Pat Finucane Centre.

Jesse Jackson in NI visit
American civil rights campaigner Reverend Jesse Jackson is in Northern Ireland to attend a series of engagements in Belfast and Londonderry.
He will also be at the old Convent of Mercy School.
Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey said: “I am delighted to be welcoming to south Belfast the legendary American civil rights leader the Rev Jesse Jackson. He has been a great ambassador for the Irish peace process and an inspiration to those who struggle for justice and equality across the world.
Mr Maskey described the Baptist minister as “one of the most important figures of our age.”
Rev Jesse Jackson was present on the Memphis balcony with the Martin Luther King when Dr. King was assassinated in 1968.
He was a candidate for the US Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988.
Survivors group Relatives for Justice also arranged for the campaigner to meet victims of the Troubles from both communities.
On Sunday, Rev Jesse Jackson will be in Derry for another day of engagements, including one at the Pat Finucane Centre.
