Rilasciati i Provos responsabili della morte di Jerry McCabe

Due uomini, incarcerati per l’omicidio colposo dell’investigatore della Garda Jerry McCabe, sono stati rilasciati dalla prigione di Castlerea.

McCabe fu assassinato durante un assalto armato contro un furgone postale ad Adare, nella Contea di Limerick, nel 1996.

Kevin Walsh, di LImerick, e Pearse McCauley, di Strabane, hanno ricevuto una condanna a 14 anni di prigione per la morte del detective.

I due uomini hanno trascorso in cella dieci anni e mezzo, compreso l’anno trascorso in attesa di giudizio.

Walsh e McCauley sono usciti dalla prigione della Contea di Roscommon poco dopo le 7 di questa mattina, dove li attendeva il parlamentare Martin Ferris dello Sinn Fein. Sono stati condotti via in un furgone e non hanno rilasciato alcun commento.

Il presidente dello Sinn Fein Gerry Adams ha rilasciato un comunicato dopo il rilascio dei due uomini.

Afferma che i due uomini avevano espresso “profondo dispiacere e hanno chiesto scusa” per il dolore provocato alle famiglie degli agenti McCabe e Ben O’Sullivan, che rimase ferito nell’attacco.

Adams afferma di aver sempre creduto alla genuinità delle scuse che “facevano eco ai sentimenti di tutti i repubblicani”.

Ha aggiunto il suo “profondo rammarico per la grave perdita ed il dolore subito dalle famiglie McCabe e O’Sullivan.

“Il rilascio di Kevin Walsh e Pearse McCauley giunge alla fine della loro condanna, nonostante fossero prigionieri dell’IRA coperti dal Good Friday Agreement”, ha concluso.

McCabe killers released from prison

Two men who were convicted of the manslaughter of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe have been released from Castlerea Prison.

Detective McCabe was killed during an armed raid on a post office van in Adare, Co Limerick, in 1996.

Kevin Walsh from Limerick and Pearse McCauley from Strabane, Co Tyrone, had been given 14-year sentences for the manslaughter of the Limerick detective.

They have completed ten-and-a-half years of their sentences, having previously served a year on remand.

The two walked out of the Co Roscommon prison shortly after 7am this morning where they were met by Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris. They were then driven away in a van without making any comment.

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams issued a statement following the men’s release.

He said the two men had some years ago expressed their ‘deep regret and apologised’ for the hurt and grief caused to the families of Garda McCabe and Garda Ben O’Sullivan, who was injured in the raid.

Mr Adams said that he believed the apology was genuine and ‘it echoes the sentiments of republicans everywhere’.

He added that he ‘deeply regrets the great loss and hurt suffered by the McCabe and O’Sullivan families’.

‘The release of Kevin Walsh and Pearse McCauley comes at the end of their sentences, despite them being qualifying IRA prisoners under the Good Friday Agreement’, he said.
