La marcia commemorativa a ricordo dei 10 lavoratori protestanti uccisi dall’IRA a Kingsmill nel 1976 è stata rimandata
William Frazer di Families Acting for Innocent Relatives (FAIR) afferma che la parata è stata rimandata alla luce di due recenti lutti e su richiesta delle famiglie degli operai uccisi.
Danny Kennedy, parlamentare dell’UUP, ha accolto favorevolmente la decisione.
“È stata presa negli interessi delle relazioni comunitarie”, ha spiegato.
“So che la decisione è stata difficile e dolorosa per molti, tuttavia si tratta di un gesto di buona volontà e desidero congratularmi con gli organizzatori e con le famiglie [delle vittime] di Kingsmill per questo passo”, ha aggiunto.
“La decisione di non marciare sabato non significa rinunciare ad ottenere le risposte chiare su chiu ha compiuto il massacro a Kingsmill.
“C’è ancora del dolore palpabile all’interno della locale comunità unionista.
“Il recente rapporto dell’Historical Enquiries Team ha evidenziato la necessità di fornire risposte a molte domande.
“Solo la scoperta della verità può essere portata alle famiglie che hanno perso i loro cari in questa terribile tragedia”.
Secondo Frazer la marcia “si terrà in futuro”.
La Commissione Parate aveva imposto delle restrizioni sulla marcia che doveva transitare attraverso la cittadina di Whitecross.
Uno degli organizzatori della parata, il Pastore Barry Halliday, la scorsa settimana ha riferito di essere stato minacciato.
Conor Murphy, parlamentare dello Sinn Fein, dice che nella cittadina nazionalista di Whitecross e nelle aree adiacenti ci sarà “sollievo” per la mancata esecuzione della parata.
“Le famiglie di Kingsmill hanno commemorato i loro cari per anni senza alcuna obiezione per cui non c’era bisogno di tenere una parata”, ha aggiunto.
Anche il parlamentare SDLP Dominic Bradley accoglie positivamente la decisione.
“Spero che la vita nella zona possa adesso continuare in uno spirito di armonia senza disagi”, ha spiegato il parlamentare nazionalista.

Kingsmills march to be postponed
A march commemorating 10 Protestant workmen murdered by the IRA at Kingsmills in 1976 has been postponed.
William Frazer of Families Acting for Innocent Relatives (Fair) said the march had been postponed in light of two recent bereavements and at the request of the Kingsmills families.
UUP MLA Danny Kennedy has welcomed the decision.
“The decision was taken in the interests of community relations,” he said.
“I know that this decision was difficult and indeed, painful for many, however, it is a huge gesture of goodwill and I wish to commend the organisers and the Kingsmills families in taking this step,” he added.
“The decision not to march on Saturday does not in any way take away from the need to obtain clear answers as to who carried out the massacre at Kingsmills.
“There is still palpable hurt within the local unionist community.
“The recent report which was undertaken by the Historical Enquiries Team highlighted the need for many questions still to be answered.
“Only by discovering the truth will closure and healing be brought to the families who lost loved ones in this horrific tragedy.”
Mr Frazer said the march would “still take place at a later date”.
The Parades Commission had placed restrictions on the march which was to go through the village of Whitecross.
One of the organisers of the march, Pastor Barry Halliday, who had helped Fair plan the parade, last week claimed that he had been threatened.
Sinn Fein MP Conor Murphy said there would be “relief” in Whitecross and the surrounding area that the march had been called off.
“The Kingsmill families have been commemorating their loved ones for years now without any objections so there was no need for a march,” he added.
SDLP MLA Dominic Bradley also welcomed the announcement.
“I hope now that life in the area can continue in a spirit of community harmony without disruption,” he said.
