The alleged victim was out on bail at the time of the incident.

The attack was said to have taken place at Newbridge filling station on the outskirts of the town.

Ryan Kevin McDaid, 22, was charged with common assault and making threats to kill while his twin brother Mark was charged with aiding and abetting common assault.

Peter Neill, 23, was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm and making threats to kill

Tensions high

The twins’ father died after he was attacked by loyalists near his home in May.

Since the killing of the Catholic community worker in Somerset Drive, tensions have been running high in parts of the town.

In September, a friend of Mr McDaid’s who was critically injured on the night of his murder, was assaulted again in the same area.

Damien Fleming was punched and kicked by two men in Pates Lane in what the police said was another sectarian attack.

On Friday, East Londonderry MLA David McClarty said CCTV was to be introduced in the Killowen area of Coleraine.

He welcomed the move which he said would assist the police in monitoring the area and “reassure local people”.

“For far too long the good people of Killowen – particularly Somerset Drive – and indeed the wider Heights area have been suffering due to the activities of a minority of criminals and trouble-makers,” he added.
