Rimandato al 2012 appello per omicidio Thomas Devlin

Devlin murder appeals delayed

The appeals of two men who stabbed a Belfast schoolboy to death will not be heard until next year.

Nigel James Brown - Gary TaylorGary Taylor and Nigel Brown were found guilty of murdering Thomas Devlin near his home in August 2005.

They were also convicted of the attempted murder of Thomas’s friend, Jonathan McKee, who was seriously assaulted in the same attack.

On Friday, senior judges decided to delay their challenges until January 2012 because their lawyers are involved in a separate major loyalist trial later this year.

The pair are seeking to overturn the guilty verdicts for what a judge described as a “horrifying and brutal attack upon utterly defenceless and harmless boys”.

Taylor, 24, of Mountcollyer Avenue in Belfast was ordered to serve a minimum 30 years in prison.

Brown, 27, from Whitewell Road in the city, was jailed for at least 22 years for his part in the killing.

It was thought the hearing, which is expected to last up to four days, would take place sometime this autumn.

But the Court of Appeal was informed the barristers in the case have also been instructed in the trial of former top loyalist Mark Haddock and 13 others.

They are accused in connection with the murder of Tommy English, a rival Ulster Defence Association chief, in October 2000.

Lord Chief Justice Sir Declan Morgan indicated the appeals by Taylor and Brown could only proceed before the summer if a date became available at short notice.
