Un ex associato del lealista Mark Haddock è stato rimandato in custodia con l’accusa di omicidio per la morte di un tassista avvenuta 12 anni fa
Gary Haggarty, 37 anni, è accusato di coinvolgimento nell’assassinio di John Harbinson, morto a North Belfast nel maggio 1997.
Harbinson, 39 anni, fu ammanettato e picchiato fino alla morte da una banda dell’Ulster Volunteer Force nel quartiere di Mount Vernon.
Haggarty è stato fermato dagli inquirenti dell’Historical Enquiries Team (HET), un’unità della polizia composta di specialisti, creata per eseguire nuove indagini sugli omicidi irrisolti compiuti dai terroristi.
E’ comparso in aula senza avvocato ma ha confermato di aver compreso le accuse e di aver diritto ad un legale.
Vestito con jeans ed una camicia a quadri, Heggart ha riferito al giudice di non cercare il rilascio su cauzione.
Dopo che un inquirente ha affermato di poterlo collegare al reato, è stato rimandato in custodia per comparire nuovamente in aula, tramite collegamento video, il prossimo mese.
Mentre l’accusato lasciava il banco degli imputati, il giudice distrettuale Fiona Bagnall lo ha esortato a cercare assistenza legale.
“Questi sono argomenti seri, i più seri possibili”, le ha detto.
Anche l’ex sodale di Haggarty, Mark Haddock, è accusato dell’omicidio di Harbinson, eseguito nel quartiere dove il famoso lealista era al comando di una banda del terrore.
Haddock, sospettato da molte persone di essere un agente al soldo dello Special Branch, fu arrestato a luglio in prigione mentre si trovava in custodia per aver partecipato, secondo l’accusa, all’assassinio del suo rivale Tommy English, dell’Ulster Defence Association, avvenuto nell’ottobre del 2000.
Le nuove accuse sono scaturite come parte dell’Operazione Ballast, un’indagine condotta dagli ufficiali dell’HET.
Fu creata in seguito al rapporto della ex Police Ombudsman, Nuala O’Loan, sulla collusione tra membri della RUC e lealisti della UVF di Mount Vernon.

Man remanded over Mount Vernon murder
A former associate of high-profile loyalist Mark Haddock has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of a taxi driver 12 years ago.
Gary Haggarty, 37, is accused of involvement in the killing of John Harbinson in north Belfast in May 1997.
Mr Harbinson, 39, was handcuffed and beaten to death by an Ulster Volunteer Force gang in the Mount Vernon estate.
Haggarty, of no fixed address, was arrested by detectives from the Historical Enquires Team, a specialist unit set up to reinvestigate unsolved terrorist murders.
He appeared by Belfast Magistrates Court without legal representation but confirmed he understood the charge and his entitlement to a lawyer.
Dressed in a checked shirt and jeans, Haggarty told the court he would not be seeking bail.
After a detective said he could connect him with the offence he was remanded in custody to appear again via video link next month.
As the accused was leaving the dock District Judge Fiona Bagnall advised him to seek legal help.
“These are very serious matters, the most serious possible,” she told him.
Haggarty’s one-time associate Haddock, 40, is also charged with carrying out the murder on the estate where he is alleged to have once ran a notorious terror gang.
Haddock, suspected by many to have been a paid Special Branch agent, was arrested last month in prison while on remand accused of the separate killing of rival Ulster Defence Association leader Tommy English in October 2000.
The new charges were brought as part of the ongoing Operation Ballast, an investigation led by officers from the HET.
It was established following former Police Ombudsman Nuala O’Loan’s report into claims of collusion between RUC officers and UVF members in Mount Vernon.
