Una bomba di mortaio funzionante è stata trovata nel giardino sul retro di una casa a North Belfast
“Oggi l’azione della polizia ha indubbiamente contrastato i tentativi dei criminali di infliggere morte, ferite e miseria sulla gente di North Belfast”, ha affermato il Soprintendente capo Mark Purdon.
L’allarme sicurezza è rientrato ed i residenti costretti ad evacuare sono potuti ritornare alle proprie case.
Durante le ricerche sono state sequestrate anche delle sigarette.
Un uomo di 41 anni è stato fermato per “attività repubblicana” e viene interrogato dalla polizia.
Nichola Mallon, consigliere locale dello SDLP, ha detto che il ritrovamento ha un impatto sostanziale sulla gente di Ethna Drive.
“Sno scioccato e molto preoccupato che qualcosa di così importante e con il potenziale di causare distruzione, e forse morte, sia stato trovato in una zona residenziale dove i bambini giocano tutti insieme.
“Questa comunità ha già sofferto abbastanza. Nella zona ci sono stati disordini nel periodo del 12 luglio e di nuovo adesso bisogna confrontarsi con potenziali violenze e confusione”.
Gerard McCabe, Sinn Fein, parla di incidente “preoccupante”.
“E’ assolutamente folle lasciare un ordigno funzionante in una zona abitata. E’ davvero preoccupante che questo ordigno fosse solo in attesa di qualcuno che lo cogliesse.
“Chi lo ha lasciato è coinvolto con cose del passato. Questa comunità vuole andare avanti. Basta”, ha concluso.

Viable mortar bomb find ‘significant’
A viable mortar bomb has been found in the back garden of a house in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast.
“The actions of police today have undoubtedly thwarted the attempts of criminals to inflict death, injury and misery on the people of north Belfast,” PSNI Chief Superintendent Mark Purdon said.
The security alert is over and residents have been allowed to return to their homes.
A quantity of cigarettes was also recovered during the searches.
A 41-year-old man arrested over dissident republican activity is still being questioned by police.
Local SDLP councillor Nichola Mallon said the discovery had a substantial impact on those living in the Etna Drive area.
“I’m shocked and very concerned that something of this significance and with the potential to cause so much destruction, and possibly death, was found in a residential area where children play en masse.
“This community has suffered enough. It was subject to rioting and disorder over Twelfth of July and now once again it’s being faced with the potential for violence and mayhem.
Sinn Féin’s Gerard McCabe said it was a”worrying” incident.
“For anyone to leave a viable device in a built-up area like this is absolute madness. It’s very worrying that this device was just lying idle for anyone or any youngsters to pick up.
“Those who left this, the stuff they’re getting involved with is a thing of the past, this community wants to move on. Stop,” he urged.
