La polizia, nel corso delle indagini sulle attività dei gruppi repubblicani, ha arrestato un uomo dopo aver ritrovato “una importante” quantità di esplosivi ad alto potenziale a North Belfast
Il quarantasettenne è stato fermato dopo le riceche compiute dal Serious Crime Branch (Sezione Crimini Gravi, Ndt) a Maeve House nella zona di New Lodge tra mercoledì sera e giovedì mattina.
La polizia ha ritrovato esplosivi ad alto potenziale in un appartamento. Secondo la PSNI non è possibile specificare la quantità o il tipo di esplosivo coinvolto nel recupero, ma entrambi sono “significativi”.
Il Soprintendente Nigel Grimshaw, comandante di distretto della PSNI, ha affermato: “È terribile scoprire che grandi quantità di esplosivo ad alto potenziale possono essere stipati in un palazzo in cui vivono centinaia di persone.
“Accolgo con favore il fatto che i colleghi del Serious Crime Branch hanno tolto questi esplosivi dalla circolazione. Il materiale è stato portato via per un esame dettagliato, ma riteniamo siano esplosivi ad alto potenziale”.
L’uomo arrestato è stato interrogato presso la stazione PSNI di Antrim.
Nigel Grimshaw ha proseguito: “Gli ufficiali distrettuali continueranno a lavorare con i colleghi e con la comunità per garantire la sicurezza di tutti dalle minacce poste in essere da questi individui e gruppi che avrebbero sicuramente cercato di infliggere morte e ferimenti.
“L’operazione di ricerca sta continuando. Ci scusiamo per eventuali disagi o interruzioni, ma dobbiamo fare in modo che tutto venga fatto per mantenere le persone al sicuro”.

High explosives found in dissident raid
Police investigating dissident republican terrorist activity have arrested a man after discovering a “substantial” amount of high explosives at a block of flats in north Belfast.
The 47-year-old was detained following Serious Crime Branch searches at Maeve House in the New Lodge area on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.
Suspected high explosives were discovered in a flat. Police said it is not possible to be specific about the high explosives or the quantity involved other than to describe both as “significant”.
District Commander Chief Superintendent Nigel Grimshaw said: “It beggars belief that quantities of high explosives could be stored in a block of flats in which hundreds of people are living.
“I welcome the fact that colleagues from Serious Crime Branch have taken this material out of circulation. It has been removed for detailed examination but we believe it to be high explosives.”
The man is being questioned at Antrim PSNI Station.
District Commander Chief Superintendent Nigel Grimshaw continued: “District officers will continue to work with colleagues and the community to ensure that everyone is kept safe from the threats posed by those individuals and groups who would seek to inflict death and injury.
“The search operation is continuing. We apologise for any inconvenience or disruption but we need to ensure that everything has been done to keep people safe.”
