I commenti di Robinson sono giunti dopo che Martin McGuinness, Sinn Fein, ha parlato della creazione di ruoli di «primo ministro condiviso» come un’opzione da vagliare dopo le elezioni per Stormont.
Ha detto Robinson: “E’ abbastanza chiaro che sono preoccupati del fatto che la popolazione unionista è unita intorno al DUP e stanno cercando in tutti i modi di indebolirla.
“E’ una tattica elettorale, la gente fa questo genere di cose”.
Il primo ministro ha respinto una proposta del leader dell’Ulster Unionist Tom Elliott per un patto post-elettorale con il DUP qualora Sinn Fein divenisse il primo partito in Irlanda del Nord.
“La proposta avanzata da Tom Elliott non viene presa in considerazione, perché si impegnò affinché il suo partito non si fondesse con il DUP quando era leader”, afferma Robinson.
“Andiamo alle elezioni per vincere. Voglio che il DUP sia in cima, stiamo andando bene e stiamo lavorando per il futuro del popolo”.
Robinson ha detto che in base all’accordo di St Andrews è il partito con la più grande base di voti che esprime il primo ministro.
Il leader del DUP ha aggiunto che non avrebbe sollevato la questione delle posizioni nel prossimo esecutivo, ma ha aggiunto che la gente poteva dare al DUP il proprio voto per garantire che lo Sinn Fein non potesse nominare il prossimo leader dell’Assemblea.
“Voglio che il DUP sia il più grande partito in Irlanda del Nord, non solo perché significa ottenere il ruolo di primo ministro. Significa avere la prima scelta dei ministeri, vuol dire andare in giro per il mondo parlando a nome dell’Irlanda del Nord. Ogni partito cercherà di divenire il più grande partito”, ha aggiunto.
Robinson dismisses minister row
Mr Robinson’s comments came after Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness said creating joint first minister posts is an option which could be looked at after the election.
He said: “It is fairly clear that they are concerned that the unionist population is rallying around the DUP and they are trying to undermine it.
“It is an electoral tactic, people do these kind of things.”
The First Minister rejected a proposal by Ulster Unionist leader Tom Elliott for a post-electoral pact with the DUP if Sinn Fein was to become the largest party.
He said: “The suggestion put forward by Tom Elliott is a non-starter because he committed himself to his party that he would not have any merger with the DUP while he was leader.
“We are in the election to win. I want the DUP to be coming out on top, we are going out to succeed and we are looking for the future of the people.”
Mr Robinson said that under the St Andrews Agreement it was the party with the largest designation (unionists) which named the First Minister.
The DUP leader said he had not raised the issue of positions in the next executive but added people could lend the DUP their votes to ensure Sinn Fein did not get to name the Assembly’s next leader.
“I want the DUP to be the largest party in Northern Ireland, not just because it means we hold the first minister post, it means we have the first choice of departments, it means we go around the world speaking on behalf of Northern Ireland, every party will seek to ensure it becomes the largest party,” he added.
