In una “condanna inequivocabile” dell’attacco alla sede dei ALliance Party in West Street e delle minacce nei confronti di alcuni politici, l’ex consigliere di Knockagh ha detto che il modo per influenzare il dibattito sulle bandiere è attraverso le urne.
Beggs ha affermato: “Sostengo il diritto alla protesta pacifica in una società democratica. Tuttavia, occorre fare attenzione che qualsiasi protesta legale non sia utilizzata come copertura per un’altra agenda, violenta – come evidenziato da chi ha attaccato gli uffici del parlamentare dell’Alliance Party Stewart Dickson.
“Gli attacchi alle persone e alle cose sono totalmente ingiustificabili. L’uso della violenza e dell’intimidazione sono atti criminali. Ci distraggono dalla questione di garantire la nostra identità britannica. I cittadini britannici saranno inorriditi nel vedere uomini mascherati avvolti nella Union Jack coinvolti nelle violenze che attaccano e feriscono agenti di polizia”.
“Il modo per combattere l’agenda politica dei repubblicani – che intendono chiaramente spogliare l’Irlanda del Nord da tutte le sue vestigia di britannicità – è quello di esporre il loro bigottismo e mandarli via con il voto. Lo Sinn Fein ha sostenuto l’intitolazione di un parco giochi ad un terrorista dell’IRA preso con una pistola usata nel massacro settario di Kingsmill. Eppure, a livello locale piangono ‘disuguaglianza’ sulla Corona posta nel centro della rotonda di Circular Road a Larne. Che ipocrisia.
“È ‘un dato di fatto che il tasso di partecipazione elettorale nelle zone come Carrickfergus, Larne e Newtownabbey, che dovrebbe in teoria essere fortemente unionista, è scesa a meno del 35% negli ultimi anni. È compito di tutti i democratici e dei partiti democratici, non ultimo il mio, impegnarsi con l’elettorato e favorire una maggiore partecipazione al processo politico. Dobbiamo fare in modo che sempre più persone si registrino per le votazioni se vogliamo proteggere il nostro posto nel Regno Unito”.

‘British citizens horrified to see masked men wrapped in Union Jacks’ – Beggs
In an “unequivocal condemnation” of the attack on the Alliance Party’s West Street office and threats against a number of politicians, the former Knockagh Councillor said the way to influence the debate over flags was through the ballot box.
Mr Beggs said: “I support the right of peaceful protest in a democratic society. However, care must be taken that any legal protest is not used as cover for others with another, violent agenda – as evidenced by those who attacked the Alliance Party offices of Stewart Dickson MLA.
“Attacks on people and property are totally unjustifiable. The use of violence and intimidation are criminal acts. They are detracting from the issue of securing our British identity. British citizens from elsewhere will be horrified to see masked men wrapped in Union Jacks being involved in violence and attacking and injuring police officers.”
“The way to combat the political agenda of republicans- who are clearly attempting to strip Northern Ireland of all its vestiges of Britishness -is to expose their bigotry and to out vote them. Sinn Fein have supported naming a play park after an IRA terrorist who was linked to a gun used at the sectarian Kingsmills massacre. Yet locally they cry ‘inequality’ over the Crown centrepiece to the Circular Road roundabout, in Larne. What hypocrisy.
“It is a fact that the electoral turnout in areas likes Carrickfergus, Larne and Newtownabbey, which would in theory be strongly Unionist, have fallen to less that 35% turnout in recent years. It is the task of all democrats and democratic parties, not least my own, to engage with the electorate and encourage greater participation in the political process. We must ensure that more people are registered to turn out to vote if we wish to protect our place within the United Kingdom.”
