Il rappresentante di North Belfast stava parlando dopo aver rivelato una minaccia contro la sua vita fatta da un gruppo di probabili dissidenti repubblicani. Una chiamata è stata fatta mercoledì sera ai Samaritani, avvertendo che la sua vita è in pericolo.
L’ultima minaccia giunge dopo che la casa di Gerry O’Reilly, membro dello Sinn Fein di New Lodge e lavoratore comunitario, è stata colpita da bottiglie incendiarie nelle prime ore di mercoledì.
Gerry Kelly ha riferito che le minacce contro di loro non li fermeranno dal loro lavoro.
“Mi è stato detto nelle prime ore di questa mattina che è stata fatta una minaccia contro la mia vita. Mettendo questo fatto in fila con il lancio di bottiglie incendiarie contro la casa di un attivista locale dello Sinn Fein e avremo un fatto molto sinistro. Questo non ci fermerà dal lavorare per la gente di North Belfast”, ha detto.
Kelly ha pubblicamente accusato i micro gruppi dissidenti di aver orchestrato le violenze scoppiate dopo la parata dell’Orange Order di lunedì.
Ha anche indicato la Real IRA come guida alle violenze che hanno lasciato 12 persone colpite da proiettili di plastica e nove poliziotti feriti.
Il ministro junior di Stormont ha detto ai dissidenti repubblicani, che accusavano lo Sinn Fein di non essere in contatto con il sentimento di Ardoyne, di presentarsi alle elezioni se pensano di essere una migliore alternativa.
Il portavoce del Republican Network for Unity, Ronan Moyne, ha affermato che Kelly “non è in contatto” con la gente di Ardoyne.
La scorsa sera (mercoledì) ci sono stati ulteriori disordini a Brompton Park, con quasi 100 giovani radunati per lanciare pietre, bottiglie di vetro e bottiglie incendiarie contro la polizia. Un’autovettura è stata incendiata nella zona di Balholm. Violenze sono scoppiate anche a Ligoniel.
Due ragazzi di 17 e 18 ani sono stati arrestati. Un secondo uomo di 30 anni è stato fermato nelle prime ore di questa mattina nelle indagini per il colpo di arma da fuoco sparato contro i poliziotti nel corso dei disordini.
L’arresto giunge dopo il fermo del 28enne Aidan Ferguson, di Cranbrook Gardens, sempre per lo stesso incidente. Quasi 50 suoi sostenitori hanno tenuto una protesta fuori dalla stazione di polizia di Antrim Road la scorsa notte, per contestare il suo arresto.
Nel frattempo il lavoratore comunitario e attivista dello Sinn Fein a New Lodge, Gerry O’Reilly, ha indicato i dissidenti repubblicani come colpevoli del lancio di molotov contro la sua abitazione nelle prime ore di ieri (mercoledì).
O’Reilly era in casa insieme alla sua famiglia quando la parte anteriore della casa in Spamount Strret è stata attaccata con una bottiglia incendiaria. Nessuno è rimasto ferito, comunque Reilly ha detto di essere stato fortunato perché nessuno è rimasto ucciso. Ha incolpato il “piccolo gruppo” di dissidenti presenti nel quartiere di New Lodge.
“E’ una disgrazia che un piccolo gruppo di persone che risiedono a New Lodge sentano il bisogno di attaccare delle abitazioni con lo scopo di mettere in pericolo vite umane” ha riferito. “Voglio che le persone autrici dell’attacco contro la mia abitazione sappiano che questo comportamento non funziona. Sono gente senza volto senza mandato e senza sostegno. Devono sedersi con la gente e dire ciò che hanno da comunicare anziché attaccare case e mettere a rischio delle vite”.
Put it to the people – Gerry Kelly in challenge to Ardoyne dissidents
The North Belfast representative was speaking after he revealed a threat has been made against his life from a group assumed to be dissident republicans. A call was made to the Samaritans on Wednesday night warning that his life is in danger.
The latest threat comes after New Lodge Sinn Féin member and community worker Gerry O’Reilly’s home was petrol bombed in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Gerry Kelly said the threats made against them will not deter them from their work.
“I was told in the early hours of this morning that a threat has been made against my life. Put this on the back of the fact that a local Sinn Féin activist and community worker’s home was petrol bombed and this is very sinister. It won’t deter us from working for the people of North Belfast,” he said.
Mr Kelly has publicly blamed micro republican groups for orchestrating the violence that erupted after Monday’s Orange Order parade.
He also pointed to the Real IRA for leading the violence that led to 12 people being hit by plastic bullets and nine police officers injured.
The Stormont junior minister called on the dissident groups who say the party is not in touch with the feeling within Ardoyne to put themselves forward for election if they feel they have a better alternative.
Republican Network for Unity spokesman Ronan Moyne said Kelly was “out of touch” with the people of Ardoyne.
Last night (Wednesday) saw a further night of trouble at Brompton Park as around 100 youths gathered to throw stones, glass bottles and petrol bombs at police. A car was also set alight in the Balholm area. Violence also erupted in Ligoniel.
Two men aged 17 and 18 were arrested. A second man aged 30 was also arrested in the early hours of this morning in relation to a shot being fired at police officers during the riot
The arrest comes after 28-year old Aidan Ferguson from Cranbrook Gardens was arrested in relation to the same incident. Around 50 of his supporters held a protest outside Antrim Road police station last night in opposition to his arrest.
Meanwhile New Lodge community worker and Sinn Féin activist Gerry O’Reilly has blamed dissident republicans for a petrol bomb attack on his home in the early hours of yesterday (Wednesday).
Mr O’Reilly was at home with his famiy when the front of his Spamount Street home was attacked with a petrol bomb. No one was hurt in the incident however Mr O’Reilly said it is lucky no one was killed. He blamed the attack on a “small core” of dissidents within the New Lodge area.
“It’s a disgrace that a small core of people who reside in the New Lodge felt it necessary to attack people’s homes with the intent of endangering their lives,” he said. “I want the people who attacked my home to know that this behaviour won’t work. They are faceless people with no mandate and no support. They need to sit down with the people and say what they have to say rather than attacking homes and putting lives at risk.”
