SDLP: Patsy McGlone in corsa per la leadership
Patsy McGlone to stand for SDLP leadership
The SDLP’s deputy leader has confirmed he will stand against Margaret Ritchie for the top post.
In a statement released on Monday, Patsy McGlone said ‘now is the time for change in the party.’
UTV reported last week he was intending to stand against the leader.
There has been unease among some members of the SDLP over Margaret Ritchie’s leadership after the party’s assembly election performance in May.
Mr McGlone said: “The way forward for us needs three strategic elements: strong leadership, clarity of message and radically improved grassroots organisation.
“The SDLP has a wealth of talent within its ranks and each member has a vital role to play in contributing to the community as we strengthen our grassroots base.
“Now, as over the last 40 years, we are here as the strong voice of integrity in politics.
“It is time for us to reassert those proud core values of the SDLP.”
Patsy McGlone is an MLA for Mid-Ulster.
