Martin McGuinness ha detto di essere pronto ad incontrare tutti i capi di Stato “senza eccezione”, se venisse eletto Presidente d’Irlanda
Quando a maggio la Regina Elisabetta è giunta in Irlanda per la prima visita ufficiale, lo Sinn Fein non prese parte alle cerimonie ufficiali.
McGuinness si è già assicurato il necessario sostegno dei parlamentari indipendenti per presentare la propria candidatura.
Ad appoggiare McGuinness sono stati Finian McGrath, Luke Flanagan, Michael Healy-Rae e Tom Fleming.
L’esecutivo del partito dovrebbe annunciare ufficialmente oggi la candidatura di Martin McGuinness.
Di ritorno da un viaggio negli Stati Uniti, sabato McGuinness ha detto a BBC di aver ponderato attentamente la propria decisione e spera di non essere un candidato che divide la popolazione.
Gli è stato chiesto come gestirebbe un’altra visita dei reali inglesi in Irlanda, considerando la posizione del partito riguardo al primo viaggio della Regina Elisabetta.
Ha risposto: “Se la popolazione d’Irlanda decide che dovrei essere il presidente, le mie responsabilità ed i miei obblighi sarebbero di incontrare i capi di Stato di tutto il mondo e lo farei senza alcuna esclusione. Questa sarebbe la mia posizione”.
Giudizio
Ha aggiunto di essersi considerato come parte di una nuova atmosfera nel paese e che la gente d’Irlanda ha “più buon senso” di quanto illustrato dai mezzi di comunicazione ostili.
“La gente d’irlanda ha osservato il progresso politico di cui Gerry Adams ed io siamo stati protagonisti per molti anni”, ha spiegato McGuinness.
“Penso preferirei il loro giudizio rispetto a quello dei mezzi di comunicazione, che stanno lavorando solo per fare titoli roboanti”.
Ex comandante dell’IRA, Martin McGuinness è stato vice primo ministro nell’Esecutivo di Stormont dal 2007.
Mentre dovrà affrontare importanti analisi del suo passato paramilitare, i suoi colleghi di partito ritengono che il suo alto profilo durante il processo di pace dovrebbe aiutarlo ad ottenere voti.
Nel 2011 il partito di Falls Road ha conquistato 14 seggi nel parlamento irlandese – la migliore prestazione elettorale nell’era moderna.
Per le elezioni presidenziali di ottobre hanno già presentato la propria candidatura Gay Mitchell per il Fine Gael, la direttrice del Comitato Paralimpico per l’Europa e l’Eurasia Mary Davis, l’uomo d’affari Sean Gallagher e Michael D Higgins del partito Laburista.

Martin McGuinness would meet Queen as president
Martin McGuinness has said he will be prepared to meet all heads of state “without exception”, if he is elected President of Ireland.
When the Queen made her first visit to Ireland in May, Sinn Fein did not take part in any of the main ceremonies.
Mr McGuinness has secured the necessary support of independent members of the Irish parliament for his nomination.
They are Finian McGrath, Luke Flanagan, Michael Healy-Rae and Tom Fleming.
Mr McGuinness’ candidacy is expected to be ratified by the party’s executive on Sunday.
Returning from a trip to the US on Saturday, Mr McGuinness told the BBC he had given careful consideration to his decision to stand and hoped it would not be divisive.
He was asked how he would handle another Royal visit to Ireland, given his party’s position on the Queen’s historic trip.
He said: “If the people of Ireland decide that I should be their president, my responsibilities and duties would be to meet heads of state from all over the world and to do that without exception and that would be my position.”
Judgement
He added that he considered himself to be part of a new atmosphere in the country and that Irish people had “more sense” than to be swayed by hostile media.
“The people of Ireland have watched the political progress that Gerry Adams and I have been at the heart of for many years,” Mr McGuinness said.
“I think I would prefer their judgement than the judgement of media who are looking for spectacular headlines.”
A former IRA commander, Mr McGuinness has been Deputy First Minister since 2007.
While he is likely to face significant scrutiny of his paramilitary past, his party colleagues believe his high profile during the peace process should help build the Sinn Fein vote.
Earlier this year, the party won 14 seats in the Irish parliament, Dail Eireann – its strongest performance in the modern era.
Fine Gael‘s Gay Mitchell, Special Olympics boss Mary Davis, businessman Sean Gallagher and Labour‘s Michael D Higgins of Labour, have already put their names forward for the October election.
