Senza incidenti la parata orangista a Portadown

L’annuale parata dell’Orange Order a Drumcree si è svolta senza incidenti

Dal 1998 agli orangisti viene vietato percorrere Garvaghy Road, strada quasi interamente nazionalista a Portadown, dopo la loro annuale marcia alla chiesa di Drumcree.

Centinaia di orangisti hanno preso parte alla parata e alla messa presso la chiesa.

Hanno consegnato una lettera di protesta alla polizia per il rifiuto della Parades Commission (Commissione Parate) di farli passare lungo quello che ritengono il percorso tradizionale.

Prima del 1998, i tentativi di impedire alla parata di percorrere Garvaghy Road avevano provocato disordini voluti dai lealisti, a Portadown e nel resto dell’Irlanda del Nord.

Quando invece, nel 1998, alla parata fu permesso di scendere lungo Garvaghy Road insorsero i repubblicani, provocando incidenti.

Orangemen hold Drumcree parade

The annual Orange Order parade at Drumcree in Portadown has passed without incident.

Orangemen have been banned since 1998 from going down the mainly nationalist Garvaghy Road in Portadown after their annual march from Drumcree church.

Hundreds of Orangemen took part in the march and Sunday service at the church.

They handed a protest letter to police over the Parades Commission’s refusal to allow them to return along what they say is their traditional route.

Before 1998, attempts to ban the parade from going down the Garvaghy Road resulted in loyalist rioting both in Portadown and across Northern Ireland.

However, when the 1998 march was forced through the Garvaghy Road it sparked republican rioting.
