Un calciatore nordirlandese che milita nella Premiership inglese è al centro di una controversia per un messaggio apparso sul suo account Twitter in cui inneggia all’IRA.
Ma Shane Duffy, difensore dell’Everton, ha negato di aver scritto il messaggio, sostenendo che qualcuno gli ha preso il telefono e scritto il tweet senza che lui ne fosse a conoscenza.
Il messaggio è apparso sull’account del nazionale della Repubblica d’Irlanda nelle prime ore di lunedì.
In seguito ha chiesto scusa per qualsiasi offesa procurata: “Non puoi lasciare il telefono da nessuna parte! (sic)”.
La polizia di Merseyside è incaricata di indagare sul messaggio lasciato su Twitter che recitava: “Yeeessss. Up the ‘Ra!”.
Il rappresentante di Newtownabbey del Progressive Unionist Party, Phil Hamilton, ha affermato: “Ho presentato una denuncia alla polizia di Merseyside per il tweet di Shane Duffy.
“Io e gli altri colpiti dalla violenza dell’IRA abbiamo bisogno di risposte.”
Tuttavia, il parlamentare SDLP Mark H Durkan è stato meno duro.
Ha twittato: “Tieni alta la testa Shane. E metti sotto chiave il telefono!”
Duffy, 21 ann di Derry, ha giocato per la nazionale dell’Irlanda del Nord nelle giovanili dell’Under 16, 17, 19, e 21.
Nel febbraio 2010, ha deciso di giocare per la nazionale dellaRepubblica d’Irlanda.
Il calciatore ha più di 48.000 followers su Twitter.
Nel corso della mattina di lunedì Shane Duffy ha ribadito la sua smentita, affermando di essere stato ripetutamente “offeso” da molti utenti Twitter per qualcosa che non ha fatto.
Ha scritto online: “I retweet e il tweet non sono miei. Devo accettare l’odio. Dispiace davvero per questo pasticcio! Mi dispiace ragazzi! ”
L’Everton FC non ha ancora rilasciato commenti sulla questione.

EVERTON PLAYER IN ‘IRA ROW’ ON TWITTER
A Premiership footballer from Northern Ireland is at the centre of controversy after a message appeared on his Twitter account in support of the IRA.
But Everton defender Shane Duffy has denied responsibility for the message saying someone took his phone and retweeted the message without his knowledge.
The message appeared on the Republic of Ireland international’s account during the earlier hours of Monday.
He later apologised for any offence caused and tweeted: “cant leave ur phone anywhere now!!” (sic).
Merseyside Police have now been asked to investigate the Twitter message which read: Yeeessss. Up the ‘Ra!”
Progressive Unionist Party Newtownabbey representative Phil Hamilton said: “I lodged a complaint to Merseyside Police concerning a tweet from Shane Duffy.
“I and others affected by IRA violence need answers.”
However, SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan was less harsh.
He tweeted: “Keep your chin up Shane. And lock your phone!”
Duffy, 21, who is originally from Co Londonderry, played for Northern Ireland at Under 16, 17, 19, and 21 level.
In February 2010, he switched his international allegiance to the Republic of Ireland.
The footballer has more than 48,000 followers on the micro-blogging site.
Later on Monday morning, Duffy reiterated his denials and said he was getting “abuse” from many Twitter users for something he did not do.
He posted: “The retweets and tweets was not me. Got to accept the hate. Really am sorry for this mess! Sorry guys!”
Everton FC has not yet made a comment on the matter.
