Il partito ha negato le crescenti speculazioni sul presunto ritiro di Gerry Adams dal ruolo di presidente
Fonti dai media irlandesi affermano che Gerry Adams, 67 anni, starebbe considerando di farsi da parte perché continua ad essere associato alle atrocità commesse dall’IRA.
E secondo le voci ci sarebbero crescenti speculazioni tra i repubblicani di Belfast secondo cui la mossa di Adams servirebbe a far emergere la parte “più tranquilla” dello Sinn Féin.
L’esistenza dell’IRA è divenuta un’importante questione dopo l’omicidio dell’ex leader della PIRA Gerard “Jock” Davison avvenuta a maggio scorso a Belfast e l’assassinio di un altro membro dei Provisional IRA Kevin McGuigan ad agosto.
La PSNI ritiene i Provisional IRA responsabili e in agosto il Soprintendente Kevin Geddes ha detto che ex Provos sarebbero coinvolti negli omicidi.
Nel frattempo un’indagine indipendente voluta dal governo ha convermato che l’IRA ed il suo Army Council sono ancora attivi.
Altri voci dicono che Gerry Adams si stia preparando a lasciare la presidenza per permettere ad una nuova figura – quasi sicuramente Mary-Lou McDonald – di guidare il partito alle prossime elezioni generali nella Repubblica d’Irlanda.
Però, rilasciando una dichiarazione al Sunday Independent, un portavoce dello Sinn Féin si èprodigato per spiegare che Adams non ha alcuna intenzione di ritirarsi.
Ha affermato: “Gerry Adams parteciperà alle prossime elezioni come leader dello Sinn Féin per rappresentare la gente di Louth e di condurre un governo progressista a fornire un giusto recupero”.
Il portavoce dello Sinn Féin ha anche detto al News Letter: “Gerry Adams è stato eletto ai successivi Ard Fheis (conferenza annuale del partito, Ndt) dal 1983 e non vi è alcun motivo per cui questo non può continuare.
“L’Ard Fheis sarà più avanti in primavera. Per ora non vi è nessuna data confermata, visto l’approssimarsi delle elezioni generali e delle celebrazioni del centenario (della Rivolta di Pasqua, Ndt). Ma lui si presenterà per essere rieletto leadership durante quell’Ard Fheis”.

Gerry Adams not about to quit as leader, says Sinn Fein
Sinn Fein have denied growing speculation that Gerry Adams is preparing to step down as party leader.
Sources in the Irish media say Mr Adams, 67, was considering stepping aside as he continues to be associated with IRA atrocities.
And according to reports there has been growing speculation among Belfast republicans that Mr Adams is preparing to step down to allow the ‘softer’ face of Sinn Fein to emerge.
The continued existence of the IRA became a significant issue after the murder of IRA leader Gerard ‘Jock’ Davison in Belfast last May and the murder of another former IRA man Kevin McGuigan in August.
The PSNI blamed the IRA and in August Detective Superintendent Kevin Geddes said a major line of inquiry was that members of PIRA were involved.
Meanwhile, the continued existence of the IRA and its Army Council was confirmed by an independent security review team set up by the Government.
It has also been speculated that Mr Adams was preparing to step aside to allow an ‘interim’ leader – probably Mary Lou McDonald – to lead the party into the irish general election.
However, a Sinn Fein spokesman denied speculation that Mr Adams is preparing to step down in a statement to the Sunday Independent.
He said: “Gerry Adams will be contesting the next election as leader of Sinn Fein to represent the people of Louth and to lead a progressive government to deliver a fair recovery.”
A spokesman for Sinn Fein also told the News Letter: “Gerry Adams has been elected at successive Ard Fheis since 1983 and there is no reason why that will not continue.
“The Ard Fheis will be later in the spring. There is no date confirmed for it yet with the election going on and centenary celebrations. But he will stand for leadership at that Ard Fheis.”
Mr Adams was elected MP for west Belfast in 1983.
