Sinn Fein mantiene il seggio di West Belfast a Westminster

Il parlamentare Paul Maskey, Sinn Fein, è stato eletto a Westminster dopo aver vinto nelle elezioni suppletive per il seggio lasciato vacante da Gerry Adams

Maskey ha conquistato oltre 16.000 voti, distanziando il suo inseguitore, Alex Attwood dello SDLP, di più di 13.000 preferenze.

Tuttavia l’affluenza alle urne è stata molto scarsa. Per l’elezione del parlamentare si sono presentati ai seggi il 37,53% degli aventi diritto.

L’apatia degli elettori veniva temuta in un contesto già visto molte volte e che rappresentava la quarta elezione in quattro anni nella circoscrizione.

Ma Maskey, che celebracva la vittoria nel giorno del suo quarantaquattresimo compleanno, si è concentrato sulle cose positive e ha ringraziato le 16.211 persone che hanno votato per lui.

“Sono felice di essere stato eletto dalla gente, hanno sostenuto ancora una volta lo Sinn Fein a mantner il seggio di Westminster”, ha affermato.

Sinn Féin retains West Belfast seat

Sinn Féin MLA Paul Maskey is the new Westminster MP for West Belfast after winning the by-election for the seat vacated by Gerry Adams.

Mr Maskey polled more than 16,000 votes, giving him a majority of 13,000 over second placed Alex Attwood of the SDLP.

However, the 37.53% turnout was the lowest percentage on record.

Voter apathy was feared in a contest many viewed as a foregone conclusion and which represented the fourth major election in the constituency in four years.

But Mr Maskey, celebrating his victory on his 44th birthday, focused on the positives as he thanked the 16,211 who did vote for him.

‘I am delighted to be elected by the people, they have endorsed Sinn Féin yet again for their Westminster seat,’ he said.
