Il vice primo ministro nordirlandese Martin McGuinness sarà il candidato dello Sinn Fein alle elezioni presidenziali irlandesi
Se domenica verrà nominato ufficialmente, il parlamentare di Derry dovrebbe temporaneamente farsi da parte dal ruolo di vice primo ministro dell’Esecutivo di Stormont.
Al giornalista politico di Utv, Ken Reid, è stato detto che il sostituto di McGuinness nel ruolo di vice primo ministro verrà scelto tra gli attuali ministri dello Sinn Féin.
Il presidente del partito Gerry Adams ha affermato: “Abbiamo bisogno di una leadership autentica ma positiva”.
Sarà un grande onore per me, proporre Martin McGuinness come candidato a questa elezione con una piattaforma programmatica larga, repubblicana e incentrata sul cittadino.

“Ritengo che questa elezione fornirà a Martin la piattaforma per continuare il lavoro iniziato nel Nord, portandolo su scala nazionale.
“Penso sia il presidente del popolo.
“La campagna elettorale darà la possibilità ai cittadini di agire per un’Irlanda migliore, per un’Irlanda unita”.
Adams ha conquistato un seggio al Dáil (il parlamento di Dublino, Ndt) nelle elezioni generali irlandesi dello scorso febbraio, dopo essersi dimesso sia da Westminster che da Stormont.
Nel frattempo l’ex candidato indipendente alle elezioni per la presidenza, David Norris, dovrebbe annunciare la sua decisione di entrare nuovamente nella competizione elettorale durante il Late Late Show di Rté di venerdì sera.
Il senatore Norris aveva ritirato la sua candidatura perché era emerso che si era appellato alle autorità israeliane per ottenere la clemenza verso la sua compagna, condannata per un rapporto sessuale con un minorenne.
Ha chiesto ai parlamentari di appoggiare nuovamente la sua candidatura, in mezzo ad un’ondata di interesse pubblico.
Dana, vincitrice Eurovision, dovrebbe incontrare il parlamentare indipendente per un nuovo tentativo di conquistare l’Aras (la residenza del presidente d’Irlanda, Ndt).
I candidati indipendenti Mary Davis e Sean Callagher hanno presentato ufficialmente le loro candidature lunedì, avendo ottenuto il sostegno di almeno 4 consigli.
Gli altri candidati, espressione dei partiti, sono: Michael D. Higgins – Labour party – e Gay Mitchell, del Fine Gael.
Le elezioni per il nuovo presidente d’Irlanda si terranno il 19 ottobre prossimo.

McGuinness to run for Irish presidency
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness will be the Sinn Féin candidate in the battle to become Irish President, the party confirms.
If nominated on Sunday, the Mid Ulster MP will have to temporarily step down as deputy first minister of the Stormont Executive.
A source has told UTV’s Political Editor Ken Reid that the new Sinn Féin Deputy First Minister will be chosen from the party’s existing ministers.
Party President Gerry Adams, who had ruled himself out of the race, said: “We need positive but authentic leadership.”
It will be a great honour for me to propose Martin McGuinness to contest this election on a broad, republican, citizen-centred platform.

“I believe that this election will give Martin the platform to continue the work which he has led in the North and in the peace process and to put it on a national footing.
“I believe he can be the people’s president.”
“The campaign will give citizens the opportunity to make a stand for a better Ireland, for a united Ireland.”
Mr Adams secured a seat in the Dáil in the Irish general election last February after resigning from both Westminster and Stormont.
Meanwhile, former Independent presidential candidate David Norris is expected to announce his decision to re-enter the presidential race when he appears on RTÉ‘s Late Late Show on Friday evening.
Senator Norris withdrew his bid for the Aras early last month after it emerged he had appealed to Israeli authorities for leniency for his ex-partner who was convicted of statutory rape.
He has urged the TDs to back him once again, amid a groundswell of public interest.
Eurovision winner Dana is expected to meet with Independent TDs to size up support for another attempt at the Aras.
Independents Mary Davis and Sean Gallagher officially became candidates on Monday after each secured the support of at least four councils.
They are on course to fight it out with frontrunner Labour’s Michael D Higgins and Fine Gael’s Gay Mitchell.
The Irish Presidential election will be held on 27 October.
