Sinn Fein nega frattura nel partito dopo ennesima dimissione

Sinn Fein denies rift within party after latest resignation

Sinn FeinSINN Fein TD Arthur Morgan yesterday denied the party is in crisis after a second councillor resigned from it within a week.

The resignation of councillors John Dwyer in New Ross and Christy Burke in Dublin come in the wake of a lacklustre local elections performance and the loss of Mary Lou McDonald’s European seat in Dublin.

Mr Morgan said that the two resignations were coincidental and denied that the party failed to make any significant gains in the local elections.

Mr Burke resigned last week claiming he was given watered down support during the Dublin Central by-election campaign with too little funding and not enough posters.

Mr Dwyer said that Sinn Fein had lost the battle for the hearts and minds in working-class areas.

“He [Mr Dwyer] had the option just weeks ago of standing for election as an independent but chose to stand as a Sinn Fein candidate.

“I think the decent thing now for John to do is to hand back the seat.

“We have more local authority seats now than we had going into the election. There is no question but there are pockets around the State where we had a poor election but we had an excellent result in many other parts,” Mr Morgan added.
