Sinn Fein sceglie Pat Sheehan per sostituire Adams a West Belfast

L’ex hunger striker Pat Sheehan è stato scelto dallo Sinn Fein per sostituire Gerry Adams a Stormont

Sheehan è stato selezionato come novo parlamentare del partito per West Belfast durante un incontro presso l’Irish Republican Felons di martedì sera.

Il cinquantaduenne, di Falls Road a Belfast, trascorse 55 giorni facendo lo sciopero della fame nella prigione di Maze nel 1981.

La mossa segue l’annuncio di Gerry Adams fatto lo scorso fine settimana, secondo cui il presidente dello Sinn Fein si dimetterebbe per candidarsi nella circoscrizione di Louth nelle prossime elezioni generali irlandesi.

Cinque dei sei seggi assegnati nella circoscrizione di West Belfast sono occupati da membri dello Sinn Fein. Sheenan affiancherà quindi Jennifer McCann, Paul Maskey, Sue Ramsey e Fra McCann.

Il presidente dello Sinn Fein Gerry Adams resterà al suo posto di parlamentare a Westminster fino alle prossime elezioni irlandese.

Former hunger striker to replace Adams

Former IRA hunger striker Pat Sheehan has been chosen by Sinn Fein to replace Gerry Adams at Stormont.

Mr Sheehan was selected as the party’s new MLA for West Belfast during a meeting at the Irish Republican Felons clubrooms on Tuesday night.

The 52-year-old, from the Falls Road in Belfast, spent 55 days on hunger strike in the Maze prison in 1981. He was 23 at the time.

It follows Gerry Adams‘ announcement at the weekend that he would step down to run for Louth TD in the next Irish general election.

Five out of six seats in the West Belfast constituency are held by Sinn Fein. Mr Sheehan will join sitting MLAs Jennifer McCann, Paul Maskey, Sue Ramsey and Fra McCann.

Sinn Fein President Adams will remain as MP for the area until the Irish elections.
